Default Thinking of ditching my SLP LT Headers

For the most part I am rather happy with my SLP LT Headers but I want more power.

I've talked to Thunder Racing where I got my cam from (TR 224 114 lsa) and Absolute Speed where I got my stage 2 heads from about my lower than expected dyno numbers. With the cats on and cutout open, I did a best of 397HP & 376 TQ. I was hoping for something like 420HP & 400 TQ.

They both said if I want anywhere from 12-20 more HP, than I should get different headers, like QTP or FLP.

I took the cats off and installed off road pipes. Some people tell me that should be worth around 5-8 HP. Yes I have LS1 edit, rear O2's are gone.

If I want to get the most HP & TQ out of my combo, what headers would gain me the most? Are Hooker Headers any good for making numbers?

There are some people on here making over 430HP & 415 TQ with the same cam and heads I got. ummmmmm, but not sure of what header they have...

Any help or tips would be appreaciated........

Bill

I ditched my SLP long tubes, and got Kooks. I went with stainless 1 3/4" stepped to 1 7/8". I don't have dyno results, but they seem to make a good bit more up top, versus the SLPs.

Bill, hold off until next week before you ditch the SLP LT's headers, I'm going with a friend to have his SS tuned and dynoed next Wednesday. He has the SLP LT's with ORP, Absolute Speed Stage II heads, B1 cam, LS6 intake and a few other things, I'll get back with you and let you know how it turns out.

I know of a place that might be able to help you. You need a purpose built set of headers. That's about the only way that you're going to ring any more out by just the headers. The place is called Headers By Ed. You probably won't want to wait. They are custom made, not mass produced. So, they're application specific to you only.

What kind of dyno was that on, if it was a Mustang dyno those would be good #'s. I have the B1 and Absolute stage II with SLP LT's that Dark Age is talking about and were going to get it dyno tuned at Detroit Speedworks on the 21ST and they have a Mustang dyno which looks like they give about 50rwhp lower than the Dynojet's.

I also have a ported TB, stock pulley, 160 stat, GMMG Cat-Back, Lid.

This was done on a DynoJet dyno with my air/fuel at 12.8-1 from 3k to 6,500 RPM's.

I'm sure that since I took the cats off AFTER the dyno tuning, I'll be around 405Hp and hopefully 385+ TQ.

When, not if I ditch them, I'll do it this winter. I don't want to tear into it anymore this year. If anyone is interested in buying them, keep me in mind come December.

LonSlo- Where did you get the Kooks at?

Options are good......

Hey Bill I just got my Kooks the other day and they are sweet. My heads should be here tomorrow too. You will know what I dyno with them because you will be there.

My Absolute Stage II 5.7s and 224/224 581/581 cam put out 397hp/386tq through SLP LTs and cats.

Jay at absolute told me the same thing, that FLPs or Grott style (QTP or PPC) will net me another 10-15 hp.

I will be following your decisions closely - I am in the same boat and am trying to make the same decisions. That being said - I haven't seen any of the Absolute cars in the 430 or 440hp range that I remember with this size cam.

Well, I can't race a dyno anyhow so the track #s are gonna be the proof in the pudding - now if I could only get a day off to go fight some rycers on street night..lol!

instead or just going by peak hp numbers, you should be looking at what the car actually does at the track. Unless of course you're just building a dyno queen.

Sometimes you can gain a bit on top, but give up some power 'under the curve', so your car wouldn't be any faster.

I'll have a good comparison after this weekend between SLP's and Kooks. BTW, the numbers in sig were made with the SLP's.

I'm also looking to buy a set of longtubes. The QTPs with the highflow collectors are looking good!
