Does anyone have any ideas as to what would cause a balancer to walk backward into the front cover and oil pan? I've never seen anything like this. The balancer is for sure falling apart, with the rubber coming out and all,but to move backward, I don't know. The car is a '98 vette with only 60k. It's not driven much, and certainly not hard. Thanks

Thanks for the replies. This is my father's car, and it's stock. He took it to GM for a headlight motor repair and they noticed this problem and said they'd fix it for $2800. I thought they were trying to pull one over on him, but he brought it to the house, and its for real. The balancer has gone into the front cover and into the oil pan as well. He said he heard a shrieking noise a few weeks ago that went away(after it clearanced itself). So, I'm going to fix it for him. I just want to be able to identify how this happened before I attempt to fix it. I should have some pics by friday evening. Thanks again.

Hell, were they going to replace the crank, oil pan, and timing cover to? For $2800.00 it almost seems like it. for what its worth, i would go ahead and replace it with a better one. I suspect the price would be about the same as a stock one. I am going with the fluidamper for mine, i have never had or personally seen a problem with any of theirs. I did hear rumors years ago of some of them leaking the viscous fluid, but have never seen it myself and the added harmonic dampering is well worth it imo.

did the outer ring move backwards or the whole balancer? the only thing i can think of if it's the whole balancer, is the hub has a crack in it. if it's only the outer ring, then it's because of the rubber coming apart.
