Default nasty rotten egg smell???

my car had a HORRIBLE smell of rotten eggs last night. it happens the worst when i have battery problems. thats when it started the first time. i had a bad battery and when i drove it with a bad battery home, it smelled like that. then last night i had more battery problems just like i had the first time but i just replaced the battery in september...why should it be having problems already and why does the rotten egg smell get worse right after? what could be causing the nasty smell?

Sounds like your cats are going bad. What kind of mileage is on your car? Usually when your cats start to go, you get a rotten egg smell.

Not cats in this case. When you cook the battery it vents sulfuric acid. That is that bad smell. Make sure you're not overcharging it with a bad alternator. It may also have a short in the plates in the battery. Touch the top of the battery after you start smelling it. If the top is hot....ditch the battery.

cats was the original thing that my dad and i were thinking.

my dad works at a chevy dealership and i talked to him yesterday about this and hes just bringing me a new battery and is going to warranty out the old one.

if that doesnt fix the problem then im going to replace the cats.

anyone have a suggestion on which ones i should use for the best performance?

the service engine light is on. i had it checked a couple months ago but was waiting to fix it till i got an LS6 intake because the problems were under the intake and i didnt want to have to take it off more than once. but it didnt come up with anything besides the problem under the intake...

the battery can give off a very foul stench if overheating, overcharging, or leaking.

its the acid inside that smells very very bad.

we had one go bad in our 56 delivery, it was remote mounted in the wheel well behind the passenger tire, we had made an access door in the wheel well inside the car. needeless to say it was horrible ride back from tunica to memphis that night. changed the battery and had to change the alternator too. problem solved.

See what the codes are first, and remember GM extended the warranty on the 00-02 stock cats on our cars to 10yrs/120K. Sounds like the light was for the knock sensor(s), but with it on you won't know if others have set without checking them.

i had that problem when my coolant was low. i had airpockets on the engine and had to flush it. it was steaming the coolant and it was right next to the battery so i think thats where it came from

No its the battery. But the bigger question is WHY is it doing this, to a second battery. I think your charging system is overloading the battery. Be careful because that thing could explode battery acid all over your engine bay, or you

Livingcanvas is right. Never, never " just change the battery " without having the charging system checked! And Auto Zone and the like stores do it for free,so why not?

quit farting and you won't have the problem.

on a serious note it sounds like the battery. I had a similar experience from a wrong battery.
