You can do it yourself. Just unclamp the hose side and pull it off, then use 2 wrenches (one to hold the pipe and one to unscrew it from the metal pipe coming off the header). If it's really on there tight remove the 2 bolts on the pipe and do it off the car.

It's OK to drive with it. P1416 will shut off after a few cold starts without a failure - you can look it up at gearchatter.com for your year and it'll tell you when. The valve is the black disc shaped valve between the metal pipe coming off the header and then connects to the hose - right near the cyl #4 coil pack - can't miss it.

How exactly do you "clean" this thing?

Could be something else, like a collapsed or loose air hose going to the passenger side for instance, but usually the valve is inop/clogged with carbon deposits. It's about $20? at NAPA and only takes a couple minutes to change and would try that first.

Do yourself a favor and yank all that stuff out. Then you won't have to worry about the check valves ever again.

Two large adjustable wrenches for more leverage - friend of mine put one end in a vice to remove his.
