Default removing stock muffler

Who here has straight up cut off their stock muffler? I hate how my car sounds right now, and I just want to cut off the muffler until I get a nice catback in less than a month. I plan on installing this catback myself. For those that have cut off the muffler, where do i make the cut? I don't want to go all the way to the y-pipe just yet, I kinda want it to dump at the rear axle. How do I cut it so that the pipe isn't loose and bouncing around? Thanks.

It's gonna be loose and banging around unless you cut it right after a hanger. Which, IIRC, are only on the tailpipes. If you're getting a catback in less than a month, just wait it out.

what if i go slightly down the y-pipe? I say a month on the catback, but it could end up being longer than that, so we'll see. One of the guys in th drag racing section had his muffler cut off, and I PMed him, but he didn't answer, so I figured I'd just pose a general question.

From that comment, I'm laughing at you. I have heard many straight piped ls1's, they sound great. wtf is a real exhaust? I don't see why people spend 500 or more on a catback system. You drive a muscle car, make it sound like one. I'm on a stock muffler with a e-cutout and lt's ory. When I open it at meets, I get nothing but compliments. It sounds mean and loud as **** and it should be.

Why not just throw a cutout on there? Cutouts sound really good on stock manifolds/cats and it could be easily swapped over to your new catback when you get it.

my buddy's 98 trans am has a loudmouth on it right now, but the resonator doesn't reach the pipe where its supposed to be clamped, so there is a gap there. It's basically an open y-pipe, and it actually sounds great, its deep, and its loud...

tylerdj, last time i had a cutout clamped in, a speed bump tore it off, i'd have to get it welded in, would that be hard to transfer over to the new exhaust? I was thinking about a cutout...I know its louder the closer u put it towards the front of the car. Do i buy a 3 inch cutout? if so, how far up the car can I mount it? I am not concerned at all about drone or vibration right now. I usually drive by myself, so thats no issue.

Most of them that I've seen are mounted back around the muffler, either right before the pipe goes over the axle, or right after. Back there I've never even came close to scraping on speed bumps and dips. All that I've heard that have it back there sound great also, with a nice deep sound.

Thats pure redneck talkin there. Yee Haw.

The only cars sound "mean as ****"are big cube, solid roller, hi-comp motors.

346 LS1's gain (not much btw) with a cut out but its ******* annoying w/ or w/o a ORY. Hell just get a LM1, then come back and talk to me.

The REAL gain of power and sound will be from the removal of cats, not a muffler.

Even then, talk to some people or look for some dyno graphs, on stock cars there isnt much of a gain except that its loud, annoying after 20 minutes, and you cant have a conversation. Not to mention the fact that its now a COP magnet. Good luck to you if they find the cats missing.

Lastly with a cutout, there is still some exhaust and sound going through the muffler so its NOT the same. His idea negates that.

Now you can laugh at that all you want but its not my car sounding AND Looking like *** w/ no tips showing. OR is he going to muffler and mount some tips. Give me a break.

Back to the point of the post, if he has a cat back lined up, in less then a month then whats hurting him to last another 2-3 weeks.... Maybe because its going to be more then that.

i know what u mean, but an open cutout on my LT1 wasn't bad at all a far as talking inside the car, and i never had a problem with cops...plus a ton of trans ams on here have true duals dumped with no tips obviously, i don't think it looks bad at all...for now, i am gonna take off the stock exhaust until i get my tax return, then i am getting a catback and then waiting for the release of those new LPP headers and ORY...this isn't a permanent fix, just something to run around with for a few weeks or so...can't sound any worse than my car does now, sounds like a hoover vacuum cleaner with the stock exhaust...

my return should be here before the end of the month, and i probably won't get it taken off until next week, so once i pay back my debts i owe, it might not be any more than a couple weeks...anyone on here selling a good catback, haha...

Also to keep in mind, for the future. IF he is thinking about a Cam, of any decent size 224/224 and bigger. A cam changes the sound of the car soooo much, that what sounded good with a stock cam can either sound like crap, or awesome depending on whats picked.

Ive driven LM1 cars with headers and ory w/ a MS3 cam. That was a freaking abortion. Unless he wants to do the job twice, pick the exhaust once.

I know you can only see whats in the sig, but ive owned a few cars and I speak from experience. IF its a T R A C K car, then WHO CARES about sound and everything else I talked about. If its a S T R E E T car then think about it.

Just wait until you can get a catback, or weld in a replacement muffler.... Way cheaper than a catback and your really not missing much HP wise missing out on a 3" pipe over the 2 3/4. Just because it will be loud doesnt mean it will sound cool. Think stock honda with loud exhaust.....
