This has been discussed OVER and OVER. For the money your going to spend to upgrade to an LS1 you can build a 500hp 383 LT4 Stroker. The LS1 has about 50rwhp more then a stock LT1. Is it worth it THAT much for 50rwhp? Or would you rather a nice 500hp Stroker?
All it takes for an LT1 to be side by side with an LS1 is..

Everyone makes fun of the LT1 but i thank edelbrock for coming out with some nice pieces for them. A friend of mine just went with a stockish rebuild for his 97 SS. Edelbrock LT4 heads, Edelbrock LT4 intake manifold, Custom sleeper cam, Shorties, Catted Y, 11.5:1 pistons.... End result was 378rwhp, 381rwtq.

there are no comparisons...ls1's respond to mods better, run forever if taken car of..i have a friend with a 99 z28 and had 167k on it and had been spraying it on the stock block for over 100k miles and the motor held up fine and ran low-mid 7's until he upgraded to a 408...IMO the front ends look alot better on the 98-02,don't have to screw with optispark and the ls1 cars times are always going to be faster mod for mod and get more bang for your buck...a 6spd ls1 car can go 12's with DR's, cutout, and a good driver...no comparison if you ask me...my 02 z28 A4 went 8.34 in the 1/8th with exhaust and a lid on street tires...stock gears and stock converter...my 99 T/A runs 7.80s on motor and has exhaust/mid length headers/lid/converter and has aslmost 140k miles on it...
H/C/I ls1 cars run with blot on 03/04 cobras..you know what it would take for an LT1 to run with a terminator?? LS1 cars can make those kind of numbers with a cam only car..don't need H/I or headers...i have seen ls1's with a lid/catback/cam make that kind of power all day long..

My LT1 blew away my LS1, My LT1 had 139,000 miles on it, stock internals, running 6 psi off a supercharger, never any problems. It was an A4, 3.73's with a ton of additional mods, subframes, walbro, meziere all the general stuff. My LS1 is good, but it'll take a couple g's to get it where my LT1 was. If money is not an issue, upgrade to LS1, Take about an extra $6,000, call EPP and get it rebuilt, with a cam. Then you are good to go. IF money is an issue, keep the LT1, get it rebuilt too with some mods and rock on.

The LS1 is a better designed Engine..it's newer technology..I would hope it would be faster.
I had a bad-*** little Hot-Cammed 350 LT1 that I built in my Car before I sold it. It was quick, ran mid 12's with the Cam, Gears, and Bolt-ons on Street Tires. Everyone else I know has LS1's and all they had to do was a Cam, or even just Bolt-ons, and be right at my heels.
I decided to sell the LT1 I had and went looking for a LS1 to drop in and try that route, since everyone was having some really good luck with theirs. After catching some good deals on other parts, I said **** it and built my 402 LSX/L92 Stroker, then I built everything else as well to get into my Car.
I have no regrets..

In times of $4/gal gasoline, it's nice to know that an LS1 F-body with bolt-ons getting 22 mpg's can beat a cammed LT1 getting 15 mpg. It's not all about power. LS1's are faster, respond better to mods, are more efficient and more reliable. It's not all about power, and the LS1 is the MUCH smarter choice.
I seriously think all the wrong info comes out in these threads by LS1 owners who "THINK" they know all about the LT1

That is really funny.I dont wanna start WW3 here.Both parties make great points on the engines.I have had the engine completely gone thru and pistons rods crank bearings piston rings all looked like new in the car.A women had drove the car b4 me,but I have a complete tune up done on the car new opti. gaskets top to bottom everything on the engine is new.And I just finally put gears and a CAI on it and I ran a 13.8.isnt bad but not great but Im not looking for a full blown 11 second car. I wanna be able to drive it everyday and get good gas mileage but also take it to the track and run just between 12.5 and 13.0.I think I have a better shot at it with an LS1.I dont wanna run headers or do a cam.Just a SLP LM, CAI,Short throw shifter,and maybe some 4.10.Do you guys think that will get it done?

Oh come on. Give me a break. The vast majority of people with a cammed LS1/LT1 get 15mpg. Don't give me some radical highway BS that's completely unrealistic. The reality is, you'll average about 15 mpg with a cammed LT1 and 20+ mpg with a bolt-on LS1 that runs equal or better than the LT1, not to mention the LS1 will be more reliable. As for the LT1 sounding better, I'd take an LS1 with single chamber Flowmasters and an H-pipe over any LT1 setup.

obveously the LS1 is better in alot of ways. would i take an ls1 over my lt1? any day. but i bought my car for $4500 with 88k on it. most people pay 20k for there ls1. and since i just got out of HS and i make minimum wage. i cant exactly afford that. so id rather just slowly spend the difference making my LT1 faster for now. i guess it just comes down to money.

I had an LT1 Z28, loved it. Got rid of it cause I didn't wanna spend the $1000+ quoted to me by two shops to fix the A/C and I thought I wanted a more practical car with far less mileage...the Malibu had 7K vs the 167K miles on my LT1. I missed the V8 power, so I got into a low mileage LS1, but looking back I should've kept my LT1 since it would have been paid off by now and I coulda just paid cash for some cheap used economy car as my DD with today's lovely gas prices. I personally prefer the look of the WS6 LT1 Trans Am over the WS6 LS1 Trans Am...much cleaner.
My LT1 was a 6M car, torque everywhere except past 5500 rpm, even with the basic bolt-ons it had it dynoed 278rwhp with the cutout open on stock manifolds. My LS1 now pulls hard too 6000 rpm until the automatic shifts....I love it....it's like the Enterprise hitting warp drive...it recently dynoed 284rwhp stock.
Mod-wise if you're gonna just stick to bolt-ons, the LS1 is a better car. But IMO when you crack into the longblock, the LT1 is just as nasty as any built LS1.
Reliability, my LT1 needed a waterpump, intake oil leak fixed, and 1 Opti at 150K miles. A/C also died at 140K miles. The LT1 is also a much harder engine to work on.....plug access is a joke and a lesson in knuckle shredding. I don't know about the reliability of my LS1 longterm, but so far so good, and just by looking at it I can tell access to the engine is much nicer. And going by my buddy's mostly stock '98 T/A with 110K miles, his has only needed a set of plugs, wires, and new O2's. So the LS1 may be less problematic.
But don't doubt for one bit that you will escape any of the other 4th gen F bod maladies by buying an LS1 car. Problems like power window motors, bubbling sail panels, blown Monsoon speakers, T/A cracked door panels, T/A headlight gears, cracked/warped dash, etc. My T/A has had a few of these show up already and it just broke 30K miles. Oh, while my LT1 always rumbled nicely, my LS1 has a bit of morning piston slap.

LS1 hands down! that is why it is the engine touched by god!! but i do like the low end torque on the LT1 but i still think the LS1 has a much more smoother and better sound then the LT1
