What if we were to put a univesal air filter on? You know, lose the lid and silencer for a filter in it place. Just connect the regular round filter up to a Fernco hose, this would flow good, because it goes straight in the intak duct to the MAF. Any ideas? Think this wll work, if it will fit under the hood? The item in question is the round tapered filter.

More like a combination of the two. Taking one of the WS6 Volant filters, and having a setup similar to the FIPK, but wih a round filter.

Do you think that the hood would have a fitment/closing problem?

I don't know, that was my question too. This would make the ram air hood, and other SSRA, and FTRA work like crap, but might increase engine flow. Then again the hood never worked in the first place.

having a lid helps push the air into that hole we call the MAF.... with out it the engine would have to suck air in...with the lid it gets pushed and directed a little bit.....

but maybe if you could turn the corner and head downwards a little bit????
hmmmmm....time to go to the store...maybe a piece of 3" mandrel bent aluminum..... with fernco to seal it up????

Sounds like what I am gonna try and do. Only since I have hood pins and removed the latch assembly, I am gonna turn the pipe down where the latch assembly was and then turn it horizontal again. Put on a cone-filter.....fab up an enclosure.....and cut out the license plate area of the front bumper

Give it a try...the only problem I could think of is that you de-screened your MAF. The Lid/"Flat K&N"'s shape staightens the airflow, as does the MAF screen. I'd want one or the other on my car : Lid/flat K&N or MAF screen.

Screw that MAF screen. It's a restriction only. Lose it. I don't think there's much power to be gained from messing with the intake. A better intake manifold is another story. More power to you guys though for trying to be innovative.

Agreed. That's where the big money is gonna be soon. Finding a great intake manifold that can fit under the cowl.

You mean kind of like this?:

Go to link, mouse over menu, select "pics" and then "ramair". Larry did this a while back and picked up 2-3 mph in the 1/4 mile.

Yes Todd, something like that, only where he has the MTI(?) lid I want to turn the tube horizontal and attatch the cone filter. Might not gain much since my car is stock intarnals; but would be a nice foundation for cam/heads later on.
Hmmm, might use PVC pipe......insulate the incoming air.........very smooth inner walls......

I remember when he did that. Good mod. VERY extensive though for a little ram air. You can't drive too close to women or children with that thing. They may get sucked in!

He needs one of those warning signs from a jet engine on that thing "Warning Air Intake"

Unit, under normal circumstances I would agree with you 100% about the screen thing. Hell, de-screening was one of the first things I did to my T/A.

But from what I've been told the MAF will not work correctly without straight smooth airflow going over it. In an odd case like this with a cone filter slapped on the front of the MAF, it seems like the air would be very turbulent compared to the Lid setup which MIGHT confuse the MAF, which MIGHT throw off Ltrims...which is a PITA to try to correct.

Give it a shot, Kidfreak, and tell us what happens.

NightHawk- I agree with your statements. I think the MAF screen is uneccesary due to the straight intake tract. It would be necessary if there was a bend in it.

Take a look at te MAF inthe LT1, it is after the elbow. No screen on it, and it still works fine. Another thing, can't see one damn picture! I want to see the "Ramair" system sooooo bad after hearing you, but I went to pictures/ram air/ ad went through all the right ---> arrows, and nothing. Anybody?
