Default To cat or not to cat..........that is the question

What are your thoughts on the whole cat converter backpressure theory???

Do you really gain low end power with cats, or is it just a myth?

I ask because I have a set of Magnaflow High Flow cats on the stock Y pipe that I used to pass smog. Sometimes I feel that my car is a bit too loud, sometimes I hate the rasp sound. I can live with it, but since I have the cats, I figure might as well put them on.

Dynomax bullets will get rid of the rasp. I LOVE them. I used to have true duals with high flow cats and 2 dynomax bullets. The nitrous gutted the cats for me, so they were there for inspection purposes only. Even with them straight through, the bullets took care of the rasp. I now have a custom 3" Y pipe into a 4" single with one 4" Dynomax Bullet.....still no rasp. :o)

But to answer your question, a little back pressure does help a little on the low end. My car ran just fine with true duals, guttet cats, and bullets though. It was an M6 back then too.

Backpressure is not what you are wanting to gain. The effects of scavenging are what you are wanting to achieve from this. Cats will help some.

I'd say put the cats on. It'll sound alot better, and you're not likely to see any performance differences

When I was in power and performance at UTI we worked on a ws6 and installed long tube headers without cats and dynoed.. found an increase of 14 rwhp without a tune. Then we installed a catted y pipe and found an increase of 12 rwhp but the mid was about 2 hp higher. Our torque table was off though i cant help you with torque numbers.

Either way your not looking at too much of a performance difference.. mostly just sound and if you want to pass inspection. Just my 2 cents..

Mine lost 14/12 with adding a custom 3" Y and Magnaflow 59959 cats with a re-dyno tune. But I'm not gagging on raw fuel fumes, nor is anyone else who's within 200 feet of the car.

hell man, take em off and sell them on ebay. LS1 cats have been going for about $250 a pair. just have to put alot of emphasis on them being sold for scrap only or they'll remove your listing.

Wish I knew that before I threw them away Seriously though, cats will tame it down a little and refine the sound. You won't lose a race because of them anyway. I chose to go ORY and picked a fairly quiet catback (hooker) and seem to be going along just fine. I had a TSP catted Y but disliked the clearance, so I jumped over to the pacesetter Y because of the $125 price and the fact that it is hands down the best ORY for ground clearance. "Yeah but the merge sucks..." Not mine. 4" Flowmaster merge, bitches.

I love the smell of gas. Plus the louder the better cause when my gf is in the car I can't hear her talking. Just my .02 cents lol

Great point, but I also carry my 2 year old boy with me most of the time. I'm sure he doesn't mind the smell, but do I really want to risk anything happening?
