Was just curious if any tuning is needed to get the most power out of headers? Back in the old Carburator days we had to richen the air/fuel mixture after headers because the additional flow from headers caused a lean condition. (Particularly when running nitrous).. is there any "tuning" required to on our cars to get the most from a header install.
Just got my PaceSetter's in with Y-pipe & O2 simms..and was curious. :-)
Thanks,

All depends. My AFR was perfect after headers! no tuning was needed. Some are WAY outta wack! my buddy's car was WAY lean after headers and he picked up 29+ rwhp with tuning! Some go way rich. Each car is differnt!

Can most of the tuning issues be cured with a MAFT. Or is it something that would require more in depth adjustments? My mods are basically just bolt on's right now...such as lid, MAF, FTRA, ASP, etc... hoping to add a cam shortly, but wanted to see how fast I could get with bolt-on's first.
Thanks for the reply

Just installed my Pacesetters today, Am dyno tuning next Thursday to see where my Af is. I do know this thing seems to pull harder and the cam sounds a lot better.

I too have the Pacesetters with Borla exhaust ory & "twister" muffler (for rasp) CURED!!!
Anyway, i have had three people ask how difficult it was to install my hookers?
They are a nice piece & add the extra HP.
I am going to have my car tuned soon. Not too bad @ this time. You can smell fuel, as the pcm is dumping fuel to mix with the airflow. Still get 23 mpg!!

99Z28RS.... I really like the way the PaceSetter's look. Started the install today. Got the drivers side in with no real problems. The welds and fit of the headers are great. It honestly surprised me how well they were designed when I consider the cost of some other headers out there. There is one thing I'm a little confused about though..the AIR pipe. There's no plate for re-attaching..so I dont know if I can just do away with the hole AIR tube's and block off the vaccum line in the back of the motor or what?? Any suggestions for that?? I'll finish the passenger side tomorrow along with the Y-pipe.. and let you know how the G-Tech and "butt-o-meter" feel. :-)
Thanks,

You can actually remove the entire air system. If you trace the piping the air pump is by the front drivers side fender kinda under the car. You'll see what I mean if you trace the tubing. You will get a check engine light though but tuning can take that out or if you can live with the light it won't matter.

A lot of times cars run rich after headers, and especially with big cams, it seems like that to me at least.

top get the most out of it go to a dyno and have them tune to about 13.3:1 then have them advancec the timing as far as they can....(meaning what every dyno tuner does if you ask them to tune it)...of course....fuel mixture may have to be a little leaner than that to pass emissions

My '02 Z28 ran very rich after installing Hooker LT's and ORP. I lighly ported the MAF to lean it out, but even removing the bridge was way too much. I installed a MAFT and tuned it with Autotap. I got great results! 1 click in either direction on the MAFT and I lost power on the dyno. The final result was 350rwhp and 360rwtq with only LT's, ORP, catback, lid, and MAFT.

I didn't realize they did emissions testing at WOT.

We dont have emissions here in Ky.. so I'm good there. I think I'll go with the MAFT route and see what it does for the car. Thanks for all the advice and tips though!
