Default z06 cam in ls1

i could get my hands on a stock ls6 valvetrain as well as the cam for almost free... my question is would i have to have the car tuned to be able to run the car and if i could... would it be safe to go wot and run it a few times without tunning it or is that a must?

also i would only consider doing this because i can get it for cheap from a friend later on im going to go with a big cam.... the thing is i wouldnt mind doing the work to swap the tiny cam for another tiny cam to gain 20hp almost free

if its free or close to it id ****** it up...you have an 01 so the ls6 manifold is already there....do the cam and valvesprings together...your stockers will not be stable enough....any car will benefit from a tune however you will be fine on your stock tune till you get one....the thing about not having a tune with that cam is that the ls1 rev limiter is set to low to take advantage of the broader powerband of that cam....I recomend a tune though....

that cam with a good dyno tune could net you 30+rwhp with a good tune

thanks man thats exactly what i needed to know! would i see a considerable gain in the rpm band that i would be limited to... i mostly highway race and mess around

you will see a little more mid to top end power...but not as much as you would with a tune...WAIT4me does awesome mail order tunes he done a cam only tune for me last spring and it was spot on.....good turn around time to...

What he said ^^^ If you dont mind doing the work I say go for it. You should pick up a good 20+ RWHP I would Imagine.

don't forget to check the pushrod length, i'm pretty sure the ls6 cam has a smaller base circle than the stock ls1.

Haha, hell yeah dude. I'd be down to help with the cam swap. It'll be fun to see the looks on people's faces when they get beat by a "stock" c5, lol.

If you don't want a real tune, there's a local guy that'll do everything but fuel/spark tables for $50 dollars. This includes raising the rev limiter if you want. Should help you take advantage of that cam (short of 243 heads, lol).

You'll need to get 7.450 pushrods, LS6/LS2 springs. And a tune will make a difference.
LS6 cam is more of a 4K + rpm cam so raising the limiter and adjusting the fuel spark a must to really enjoy.
Do not raise limiter and not touch fuel/spark. You could run lean on top and detonate which can be hazardeous to your motor health.

I just put my LS6/LS2 cam and lS6/LS2 valve springs for sale cheap if you have any problems getting the cam as you said.

No reserve and its at $5!

You'll want to get the car tuned to take advantage of the LS6 top end. The ZO6 timing curve is less at part-throttle, so might get a bit of knock at lower RPM. On the flip side the timing curve is much more aggressive than the LS1 tables up top, so you'll be leaving lots of HP on the table using the stock LS1 values.
