Default cam for 408

im going to be ordering a 408 from TSP soon and im going to be sending my LS6 heads to them to get them turned into the stage 2.5 heads. i currently have a tr 224/224 cam ona 112lsa and dont really want to buy a new cam and was curious how that cam is going to react in that motor. that car is a 6 speed car with 4.10's. it is a DD so streetability is a must and what kinda power is it going to put out.

There "GIANT" cam works really well in a 408, but my advice would be to use something ine the 242/248 range on a 113. 4:10s might be a bit much also fwiw.

More CI makes a larger cam streetable. I say ask TSP to see what they recommend with their heads and motor for the setup. A cam should be the last piece specced out and they can custom grind as well. Sell the 224 and get the cam meant for your setup and be happier in the long run. Good luck.

In general terms, a 408 will want a cam around 10 degrees larger than a 346ci LS1. Do a search for the cams that you like in an LS1 and start thinking 10 degrees more. This will get you close. Obviously, heads/intake/exhaust/compression will skew these numbers so if you have a unique combo, consider a unique cam for it. One size does not fit all.

STOUT would be the optimum word here. Power under the curve all day long!
The heads will make the power so bigger valves and opening them up a little will certainly help a lot.

We just completed a 408 for a customer who went with TSP stage 1 heads and an MS4. 470 rwhp and 450tq, you would be in that range with stage 2.5 heads. With that 224/224 cam you could go stage 3, not sure of TSP stages, an have a very strong low to mid rage setup with decent top end.

The 408 with stage 1 heads and the ms4 is soft below 3000 rpms but screams above that.

it would most likely act like a big block...except with stock ls1 shiftpoints, idle, power curves, and driveability. probably generate 435ishwhp and similar tq.

bookoo low-mid range power, not so much above 6,000 rpm. would be great for a truck or something doing pulling. in a car i think you'd want a larger cam. it would be out of steam early (~5800-6000rpm i'd guess) and leave a lot of power in a larger cam swap.

run it and see if you like it. it's not like changing cams is hard to do. you may love it and would've otherwise been kicking yourself had you bought a different cam.

i talked with shane from thunder racing today and he is gonna spec a cam for the 408 but hes gonna base it off the way the 224-112 acts in and ls1 so we'll see what he comes up with, he said it was prolly gonna something in the mid 23x low 24x around 590 lift intake and exhaust on a 115 lsa
