Pretty sure it's 5/16. I used wooden dowels and rounded the edge I inserted. Worked like a charm.

Also for what it's worth just use the TDC method when changing springs it worked a lot better for me.

5/16" is the correct size. Spin the cam a few revolutions to get the lifters in the lifter trays. Some may not stay in the trays. I used 5/16" steel rods on my car. You could also use the pen magnet method to hold the lifters, get 16 pen magnets if you want to do it that way. Good luck.

what tool did yall end up using for the spring compression and do you think it would make a difference? also is the longer crank bolt necessary? and where could i get one? also would it matter to round the edges on the metal tube?

I used the crane install tool (CRN-99472-1) for the springs, it was nice to do two springs at once. I also have a harmonic balancer install tool I bought from a guy on this site (618HAWK)

Don't use the autozone one, you can get the pulley there though... I recommend the crane tool as well but if you are short on cash get Tims tool its relatively cheap!

do i need a new pulley or if you were referring to a pulley puller i already have one. anyone know about where to get the longer crankshaft bolt? and how much easier is it to do either the TDC method or the air tank one?

I used the autozone tool that grabs the spring fromt the top and bottom and compresses it. I bought a long crank bolt from napa and used 5/16 wooden dowels from lowes to hold the lifters up. I rented the compression tester from autozone and hooked it up to my aircompressor via the drier and regulator for my paint gun to hold the valves open
