Whats a a decently thick brand oil at operating temps then if they are all fairly similiar? If they were then whats the point? wouldnt everyone run just run 0W-20 and be done with it?

exactly a heavier oil is stupid IMO because it causes more wear at start up and takes longer to get to that operating viscosity i will try and find this oil thing i read written by a rocket fricking scientist and post it on here for you to read but be warned its long as hell but very interesting and great info

Oh boy not this again.
Oil will not cure piston slap.
Best oil to use is GC 0w30 period......
oh and do read the link above you'll learn a lot.
0w is great for cold start from Canada to Texas or AZ.
we all know cold starting an engine is were we get the most wear.

Also keep in mind if you think 20w50 is best your wrong.
F1 engine's use straight 20 weight oils and maybe even 10 weight oils.
