i'm gonna put in a hotcam my 04 gto. the car has 40K can i use my stock timing chain?

i just dont wanna risk pinching hte "O ring on pickup tube, and oil pan leaks due to removal and reinstall of the oil pump

You will likely be OK. I think you will also find once apart you have an LS2 chain anyhow. We did a cam in an 04 Vette and it had the LS2 chain so we left it alone.

 

i would change it.

 

I used my stocker, it has 100k on it and still looks new. I didnt want to go thew the bs of removing the oil pump either. You will be fine...

 

If it is not a LS2 chain I would upgrade it to a LS2 chain, They're super CHEAP!!!

 

thats what i'm thinking . the cam only has 525 lift if i was installing a cam that has 550 or higher lift it wouldnt be discussed

 

If your going in there and you already have 40k miles on it, it only makes SENSE to change it and you should see how the sprockets look ( the points should be sharp, if they are dull and really rounded then change it. They are only like 40 bux and 95 with the sprockets!
When I put my HotCam I changes the Pushrods to chromoly, the oil pump to a melling, the chain to an Ls2.
But thats just my .02 though.

 

You could reuse the timing chain, just make sure the chain isn't loose.Like vettenuts said it may already have an LS2 timing chain. If it doesn't have the LS2 chain you might as well upgrade it since it is cheap.

 

Oh yea forgot to mention, just because it looks new and is shiny doesn't mean it ok, it might be stretched out! and should be replaced.
