Default Too much cam for a 5.3?

How much really is too much for a pretty stock 5.3? Other mods would be intake and ehaust (lt's) only. Stock truck intake and tb, 799 heads, 918 springs and LS7 lifters. I want a good, lopey idle, but dont want to sacrifice all my bottom end. Trans is a TH350 (stall??)
Generally speaking, would this be good?....

Intake: 230.7 - .581
Exhaust: 223.4 - .564
LSA: 111.4

i have read that people dont like to go over a 224 cam with the 5.3

Yeah, I read it too, but a few years ago, people would have never used a TREX in the LS1 either, it was too big.

Depends on what the 5.3 is in. In sand rail you would be ok. In an crewcab, you would need a decent size converter and/or gears. Also, the truck intakes kind of peak flow around 5800-6000 rpms. After that, they maintain the same flow.

All in all, what are your intentions and use?

Its going in a '72 Blazer 4wd. Weekend cruiser/offroad. Wont be hittin the rev limiter often or running down a timed track, so the 5800-6000 is good. Just looing for a good, all around power curve with a healthy idle.

i got a 224-228 in my 5.3 and thats about all i would go.

that truck isnt mine i was just saying my cam is close to that one (the one in the video is a vinci cam ) .... and my motor isnt in anything yet or i'd tell you how i liked it

the vinci cam from that video is grind number 056 under car cams and 045 under ls truck cams look it up on there website

over on ls1truck a guy picked up 70hp with this cam swap over the stock cam

In a 5.3 a 220/220 112 +4 cam works like the 224tr cam in the 5.7 ls1.

The reason you dont want to go too big is the compression ratio is less in the 5.3. If you bump it up you can run a bigger cam, otherwise you lose too much lowend torque

Nothing yet, but I am leaning toward the Vinci cam because of the impressive torque curves.

Tough call. I would choose a cam at 220/220 and under for a 4wd. I do not think you can go wrong with one of the Vinci truck cams. Hell, 90% are comp cams anyway.

In a heavy truck + that manifold you're are gonna want a cam that makes torque. TC or not also makes a diff. Tow? Offroad it? IMHO all the cams mentioned above are too big for a truck that is NORMALLY used like a truck. Look at the biggest tq. cams not HP cams... That will make you the happiest

As a rule of thumb subtract about 5* duration and a cam for a 5.3 will behave ABOUT like it would in a 5.7.

I think I will be looking for a 224ish Vinci cam. I want some top end too, but with a decent torque curve also. I am still searching and learning before I make my decision. Thanks for the info.

Take a look at Thunder Racing's cam selection. They have a 224 and a 220 low lift version. This should help keep the rpms down a little.

I emailed Comp for there opinion. I thought it was on the small side. Any opinions from you guys? Here is what they had to say:
