Default gm mls head gasket thickness?anyone?

I just pulled of my stock 853 heads and I wanted to change out the head gaskets with the gm mls. but my questions is how much thinner if any is the mls compared to graphite because I have a very larger cam(244/248 .630"/.630" lsa 112) from New Era Performance (thanks Mike!) which I was assured wouldn't have any clearance issues with stock heads and head gaskets.

The compressed thickness of an MLS is actually more than a Graphite. I think a Graphites compressed thickness is ~.42-.45ish, so you're actually gaining some clearance going with the MLS gasket.

According to SDPC the compressed thickness of the graphite is 0.056":
http://www.sdparts.com/product/12498...GasketKit.aspx

and the MLS is 0.060":
http://www.sdparts.com/product/12498...2002andUp.aspx

But keep in mind those are the advertised numbers, actual measured could be a bit different.

If your heads have the windows cut into them the GM MLS gasket won't work. Im pretty sure 853's have the windows and leak coolant if you use the MLS gaskets.

You can tig weld the gaps in those early heads and then surface them a tiny bit and then you can use the MLS gaskets on them too.

When using the copper spray what is the process to applying it? Spary it on the head, block and gaskets? or just the gasket?

These are my early year 5.3's I was planning on using the stock LS2 MLS gaskets on when they go on my LS2 block. Do these have these "windows"? Holy **** just when you think you have covered all the bases this **** is ENDLESS LOL.

I wish they made a .040 gm mls for price reasons, but until then I guess I'll stick with cometics and copper spray.

JFM-jr your heads do not have the notches in them. The notches are located on the exhaust side of the deck on#3 and #6 cylinders.
