Default LS2 chain?

Do you have to change gears if you use a LS2 chain in a cam swap? Or would a LS6 chain be better?

Actually, at this point in time the chains are the same part. The newer LS2 chain is now the replacement for all earlier LS1/LS6 motors. It will run on stock gears, but you need to ensure they are not worn so the chain will disengage properly from the sprocket as it spins.

but isnt the ls2 chain a much heavier duty unit?

The LS2 is heavier than the original LS1 chain....but GM only provides the LS2 now!

I bought the LS2 chain for my head/cam swap, thinking now I shoulda bought the katech instead.

A more critical decision is the harmonic damper. The chain survivability also depends on this as well.

Can you explain this a little more?

Basically it becomes a problem when you are running a lightened pulley?
