Cranking it over without fire often will not get oil all the way to the top end in amounts you can see or the gauge can register. Think about how many RPM the engine is turning when actually running, even at idle, compared to what it's turning via the starter cranking it. That pump can only do so much at that small RPM (recall how your pressure goes up at WOT compared to cruising...it is a function of RPM!).

You probably knicked a cam bearing or two...

What crank pulley do you have on the car? I know that when you upgrade to a double roller timing chain it shortens the distance between the oil pump gear/lower timing chain gear and the crank pulley. Alot of crank pulleys have to be machined to compensate for the shorter distance to the oil pump gear. I know that SLP pulleys already have this machined into their crank pulleys. My friend did the same thing and when he tore it down the brand new ported oil pump was toast. He replaced the pump, put a SLP pulley on it, and it was fine.

I used pressure priming when I did my build. pressurized 2 quarts in the sending unit hole pulled the fuel pump relay and turned it over. Only took a few second for oil pressure. Used a Comp double roller, melling pump. Also made the hole on the shim a little bigger than the block hole and used gasket seal on both sides of the shim just to make sure it couldnt get blocked or leak in anyway.

When using a double roller, there needs to be a shim set behind the oil pump to make clearance for the dual row chain to clear the pump. I'm not totally sue but I think all duoble chains need the oil pump shims. Don't quot me on that!

One shim has the hole for the oil pump in it. If installed incorrectly, it could block the flow of the oil into the block.

its got the stock pully on it now.. when you say he toasted a branded new ported oil pump what do you mean?

when i built my LQ4, i went thru hell getting it to prime-finally jacked up the rear, hoping oil would flow into the pump thru the pickup tube, finally got oil pres-there is nothing wrong with the double roller chain, except if the one spacer is on wrong, it blocks 1/2 of the oil passage-but i would think you still get some pressure-there is a plug on the d/s
front of the engine, goes right to the pump-you could pour some oil in there, see what happens-w/o a gauge or something, hard to tell what your against,
but waiting to see oil on the rockers while cranking isnt always an accurate idea what the pumps doing-cranking RPM's are around 150, where idle is around 900 or whatever
good luck

My double roller works fine. I think you need to fire it up. Spinning that ported oil pump with the starter, isn't going to prime it.

Did you install the little plunger that goes in the back of the block under the rear cover??? Looks like a little plastic dumbbell...

That is great news and your patience to ask the questions, and proceed carefully, has paid off. You have solved the problem, little or no damage to the engine, and made the best use of your time. Good work!!!!

if it's a stock motor it won't have shims. if you're running a double roller timing chain and a melling oil pump for instance then the shims are included with the timing chain kit and new bolts to space out the pump further to allow clearance

It had a ECS cam put in by ECS(vette shop) in NJ and they put in a double roller(I think) along with some better valve springs for the cam....It was the stock pump as far as I know but now I'm rebuilding it after he spun a bearing so I got a new pump for it but I don't remember any shims when I took it apart...where was it supposed to go?

shims go between the block and the oil pump and the oil pump bolts go through them. i used a thin layer of ultra grey in between the shims as well to ensure a good fit.

I got scared when i fired mine up after the cam and oil pump change. I thought something was seriously wrong it sounded like ****. Just put the coils on and fire it up. It will sound like something is seriously wrong for a few seconds then the oil pressure will just pop right up.

60 psi? Mine is at around 25-30 psi at idle. It was like that with the stock pump and the new ls6 pump as well. I have to really be spinning it hard to see 60psi.
