Default TR228 cam, thoughts

I've got an 02' C5 with the mods in my sig. I'm considering a cam package from TSP with the TR228 in a 114LSA. My goals are for more power than stock, a smooth idle, and no surging. Does anyone have any experience with this one? I'm considering 1.8RR's, but I'm concerned about what pushrod length I should go with if I get 1.8RR's, I do not want to fly cut the pistons. Will 1.8RR's on this cam give me a noticeable increase in HP over the stockers? Thanks

Why do the rockers. Just get a bigger cam? No real reason to do both. The 1.8 rockers are an easy way to get the added lift & duration with out doing a cam swap.

As far as the cam. If I were to do a 228 cam, I would probably get the "Tony Mamo" "recepit" cam. The tr228 would be a second choice. Also, with a 6 speed get the 112 lsa.

if you want the same duration (or very close anyways) but more lift you can just get a slightly more agressive lobe cam. at the moment i can't remember what series they are though but they aren't hard to find on here.

Duration will also be slightly affected as well as lift with the 1.8 rockers.

I did not see at first, you said a TR228 cam as in a Thunder racing cam. If you are getting it from TSP, that is a toatlly different cam. I am not a big fan of the TSP cams.

The one I was looking at was from Texas Speed. I had their TR224 in my 99' C5 and liked it, I picked the TR228 as it was a little bigger and would give me a tad bit more power. I'm looking for a good usable powerband on a road track, not just for drag.

why in the world are you guys calling cams from texas speed "TR cams?" TR is for thunder racing and they dont make a 228 cam. texas speed has a 228 and a 228r. the 228r is a little more aggressive on the lift

the 228r is on xer lobes which is .588" lift or so.if i was guesing the other one from tsp is on xe lobes.alot of the vendors on here use the same cam company for their cams. can't remember who thunder uses but tsp has just a good cam as anyone else's cam with the same lobes since they come from the same spot in memphis.

The tsp 228r cam is a great cam...
Im in the middle of a build and the tsp 228r cam almost got the job... We are building a stock ls1 short block with prc 5.3l stage 2.5 from tsp but with gm's asa cam. We went with the asa cam because it sounds sick, it's great on the valve train, it will get us to the 400rwhp mark, and it sounds sick.

That's what I hear from a lot of people, it' s a good all around, not too radical cam over the stock one. That's all I'm really looking for, the combo on Texas Speed's site looks pretty good, cam, springs and pushrods for like $580. I don't think I'd need more than a comp 918 as it's not a .600+lift cam, and other than a few incidents, the comp's seem like good springs.

Would I need new retainers/locks? Or can I use the stockers along with the stock lifters? I'm thinking I should invest in some aftermarket 1.7RR's instead of 1.8's, just because I've heard the factory ones aren't very strong...

1.8 rockers won't work with most of today's cams....unless they are old lobes with .525" lift or so.

they generally say "not reccomended" on the websites.

stock rockers are plenty strong. the bearings sometimes give out, but those are only a few instances. money better spent else where.

tsp grinds them with either 114 or 112. I think that one is on a 114lsa
