Default Comp "R" lifter preload setup?

I am about to measure for the correct pushrod length and was wondering if anyone had some helpful hints on the preload for comp r lifters. Comp's site says .002" to .004". There is not a big range here. How would I precisely measure for this? Do I have to have preload set correctly to get proper pushrod length?

Copied from their web site.
DESCRIPTION:
Pro Magnum Hydraulic Roller Lifters
Chevrolet Small block. For use in blocks originally equipped with hydraulic roller cam. 1987 to present, and GEN III, LS1, LS2, and LS6.

COMP Cams® Pro Magnum Hydraulic Roller Lifters™ are specifically designed to perform at higher engine speeds. When engines are equipped with a hydraulic camshaft, high rpm is limited by the improper position of the internal piston as the lifter inevitably "pumps up". This improper location results in open valves and therefore leads to lost power or sometimes even engine failure. NOTE: These lifters require an adjustable valve train (check here for adjustable valve train components), and must be pre-loaded to .002" to .004" for proper operation!
Any ideas?

.002-.004 is probably about 1/16th of a turn past zero lash.

With stock rockers, and a TREX V2, I put 0.020" preload on my comp R's, and had the quietest LS valve train anyone had ever heard! No noise whatsoever!
I also made over 490 rwhp with that 348ci LS1 setup.

I think you answered your own question. They are too hard to set with pushrod length and Comp recommends an adjustable rocker. A lot of guys seem to run them deeper then Comps recomendation.

I have adjustable rockers. My heads are milled so that is the reason for pushrod length check. I think I will try .020" as I will not be revving it to extremes.

Someone please tell me how you checked the .020 preload. Please dont give me the 1/4 turn, 1/2 turn from 0 lash.

What type of adjustable rockers? A stud mount adjusts differently than one with the adjustment threads directly over the pushrod.

I have Comp rockers ( stud adjustment type). I am thinking I could set up my dial indicator on the rocker arm above the pushrod and go 1/4 turn past zero lash and get my measurement that way.

Assuming a 3/8-24 thread on the stud, that is approximately 0.017".
