Default 347 or lq

Ok well i cant really make up my mind on which way to go, i am on a pretty tight buget...

I am either looking at keeping my ls1 and doing a Tsp 347 rotating assembly in it or just doing a lq4/9 short block or just do rods and pistons, my questions are:

Which would be a better way to go? i know lqs are running pretty cheap right now but it will be used...

how much do i expect to pay for all the machine work involved with the 347 or rods and pistons? i will be putting it together myself...

The reason i am doing this is cause my motor has started smoking, i kinda want to keep my ls1 cause everything insides the heads and the cam is all new

And would the 347 be ok for about 100-150 shot

I guess what i am asking is what way would you guys go if you were on a tight budget?

I built my 347 on a tight budget and schedule because I hurt the motor and it is my DD. If I could go back, I would have bought a 408 long block from TSP. I would have spent ~ another grand on the long block vs. what I spent rebuilding mine.

Damn it took you about 6 grand to do the rebuild... this is gonna suck if its gonna cost that much my car is going to be down forever

I can get the rotating assembly for around 2 grand, how much does machine work usually run?

Or what do you guys think about a 370 short block through Tsp? they are a little over 3 grand... then just use all my top end and everything else off my motor?

I just a rebuilt for 3200.00, local reputable builder did mine though. once you have to start shipping stuff you might want to look into a shortblock from one of the sponsors.

I've got maybe $3000 in my engine and thats pretty much all new stuff to freshen it up. 347 is not really expensive if you just do the machine work, pistons and rods. What made mine expensive was all the little stuff, such as: Lifters, all new gaskets, different cam, new LS2 timing chain setup, knock sensors, etc. Thats what jacked up the cost, but I knew it would be good to go ahead while it was out to do these things. Its a snowball effect, you know you will say "since i've got it apart might as well change such an such" that right there is what costs alot of money.

As for pistons and rods thats maybe $1500, then another $500 for machine work.

I've been through this debate myself. I thought about a 347, 383, and 408. For the money, I'd go with the 408. Something to consider is that by adding forged internals to a 347, you'll actually be increasing weight that will rob some power. So, you'll actually be down on power NA from what a stock motor would be with the same setup.

Thanks for all the help i still cant make up my mind haha... i think i might just do the 347 it sounds the cheapest besides the stock lq short block, but i would like to keep using my heads cause i just rebuilt them with my cam swap about 1k miles ago.... and most of my small stuff is done i have the ls2 timing chain, ported oil pump, new cam and everything new in the heads... i think about the only stuff i will need is gaskets, lifters, bearings and any sensors i want to replace... i think i will just do pistons and rods instead of a whole new rotating assembly since my crank is still good.

I think it will be a goodtime and a good reason to do true duals on my car since i have it apart... atleast thats what i will say to myself haha

Being that your heads/cam are pretty recent, I'd rebuild the bottom end.

Machine work should be in the neighborhood of $1000.00, figure in the rest of your parts $$ and that should get you a close price.

I spent 6k.. but that was incl. heads, cam, bottom end, and machine work.. which I needed all of... so in my case I would have been better going bigger.

Well i just found this... i will attach the link below but its a Schwanke short block. Its a 5.3 block made into a 348, the whole short block is just 1700...

What are your guys thoughts on this? Has anyone ran this motor in there cars before? and will all the parts off of my motor fit? i mean its pretty much the same block as the Ls1 only in iron right?

348 is going to have that block maxed out, which is 3.910 bore. So if anything ever happens to the bottom end it would be cheaper to just throw out that block. This is why most people do 3.905 so if something was to happen to a ring or something we can still bore it out to clean it up without having to get a new block.

I've heard some good things about Schwanke engines, but I've never had any personal experience with them. I built my own engine from oil pan to heads and as for Machine work, I may have $500 total and thats everything from boring and honing to valve job. Of course it helps that this guy does it all on the side .

If you have to replace the crank I would go ahead and but a 4" crank and go ahead with a 408. Thats what I would have done had it been me, but my crank was good so thats really the reason I went 347. There are no performance increases from going 346-347 its just like any stock LS1, but mine will just take alot more abuse on the spray .

i would not go with a 5.3, if you want iron try to find a 370 with forged pistons. talk to the sponsors and see what they have. there is no point in picking up more weight for an engine that is the same cubes as a stock ls1.

A 347 can take as much nitrous as you want pretty much. It all depends on what you build your bottom end with. A nice set of nitrous pistons with some meat between the first ringland and you can spray that champ with a 400 shot if you want to. Its all in the setup, same thing with a LQ .

thats the same kind of situation that made me draw up my new twin turbo setup. Can't drive for another 14 months, might as well build something worth driving the **** out of when I am able to again.
