Default oil pump

I would never put another melling anything in my car. Year and half build and 600 miles on a fully built 383 and my spring breaks in my high volume 296. Know i have to pull it all apart and throw a new one in... pain in the ***. I would go with the slp. Also the company won't even send me a new one or the money back after they sent me a lemon...

Melling= Chinese garbage. Personally I wouldnt consider either. I would go with a KATECH ported and blueprinted LS6 unit. Katech has been working and winning with the GEN III platform since 97. They flatly know what works in these engines. I get so tired of people here acting like you need all this oil pressure in a stock clearance motor! Take some time and read up on oil and oil systems. It will get you over this high pressure/high volume BS when using factory or close to factory clearances.

Who has owned both melling 296 or ported ls6?

Sounds like 296 is the winner from most of the replies. Just now looking into lsx motors and looking to build a lq4. I had a ported ls6 on my list of parts to get.

Default extra porting?

On thunder racings site they offer the 296 melling with additional porting for 75 bux. Is that something that yall did or just a gimmick? Thanks for the info!

I have had both, no problems with either. I chose to run a melling 296 in my current motor since it is older and almost 100k miles. A little extra volume is fine by me. If you spin your motor to high RPM's, I would consider using the low pressure spring as the 296 will empty the pan.

I just recently purchased my second Melling. I ran their standard replacement M295 for a couple of years with no problems. It would push 70 psi from 4k and up.

How hard is it to put an oil pump in? Something that can be done with hand tools in the garage?

It can be done relativly easy. Only specialized tools you'll need are an inch-lb torque wrench, 250+ lb/feet torque wrench, something to lock the flywheel/flexplate and the cam swap gasket set IIRC. Just be damn careful when workin with the pickup tube bolt and o ring.

Does that mean you dont have to run the spacers with a double row chain?

Yeah...I wasn't too impressed with their customer service either. I run a ported LS6 now. This failure took out the LS2 in my GTO.

GM unless you need the extra oil for a turbo or something.
