I know the smarter thing is to just replace it, and I'll most likely go that route. My only problem with this logic is that it can be used to justify replacing a lot of parts. Why not just pull the heads since the springs are already off and replace the lifters, since the intake is now off why not throw on a 90/90, well now I'm going to need bigger injectors.....next thing you know it's a 3 grand cam swap.

just cause I'm curious....how many people have actually has their oil pump fail. I've owned and driven multiple vehicles(lsx and non) past 150k on stock oil pumps and never had one fail (one of which is 89 chevy at 480k). I hear a lot people saying they "hear" that they go bad....but no one has ever personally seen it. I'm at basically 100k now(on my SS) and have had multiple sub 238 duration cams in on the stocker....no oil pressure problems.

i had an 87 astro w the 4.3 and the pump bled off pressure prematurely at about 200k. i was getting about 40 psi cold idle and 5-10 psi at hot idle. i put an auto zone pump in and had 50 psi hot idle and 70+psi cold idle. Huge improvement.

Melling makes a good HV+18% oil pump or you can go with a ported LS6 as I have read here. Either way if your doing an other than "Stock" rebuild you want either a HV HO or a ported LS6 pump, also at 100K miles replace your pick up tube. You can also go with a deeper oil pan and have more oil available again depends on the build you're doing.
Get rid of your stock pump
YOU ARE ASKING FOR TROUBLE
And I am sure the guys here will not hesitate in laughing at you for not taking advice. Laughter and advice is free pride that cause mistakes usually costs money.

The '98 Formula that I used to own was on its second motor because the oil pump died and my ex wife was (and still can be) a little *slow* when it comes to paying attention to gauges.
