Almost 200K motor, is it to late for high HP

![Question](https://ls1tech.com/forums/images/icons/icon5.gif)
I have a 02" trans am with almost 192k miles on it(I do a lot of driving).... I had plans on running a cam and some spray this summer, but i dont think the motor will be able to handle the power. Was wondering what should I do, so that I can mod the car with high HP parts? I heard of rebuilding my engine, but what exactly does that consist of?, and about what is the average price for the service?.
thanks
thanks

a rebuild is a good idea. I am planning a rebuild for my engine right now and I am only at 130K miles. You could get a rotating assembly from one of our sponsors which will include almost everything you need. Some people here will suggest picking up a complete block since the amount of money is almost the same (once you include machining cost, special tools, etc.) depending on what you are looking at. you have some options here, as you could do a stock rebuild (347 cid) or a 383 if you have the aluminum LS1 block, forged internals will be something to think about if you are planning on spraying. I am sure others will chime in with more helpful information since I am not an expert in the subject, either way good luck in your build!!

Rotating assembly is a good idea, new bearings (cam, crank, connecting rod), all gaskets, new oil pump, and a complete cam kit that includes pushrods, valvesprings retainers, cam and timing chain. Your looking at a chunk of change though man.

If you've got 5k to spend you can easily afford a forged shortblock, or even a stock 6.0 shortblock for a cheap base and build it up. That would be much easier and probably cheaper in the long run then rebuilding your current engine.

how hard have you driven it? has it been maintained? I've seen motors at 150k look prestine when the owners have maintained them. and I've seen motors at 50k that are completely dead because the owners have flogged them at high rpms constantly. Just because you are at 200k doesn't necessarily mean you have to rebuild. all that being said, I would still stay from spray regardless.

And well my car has been through a lot, never really had any motor problems just tranny and rear, so i think that the rebuild might be at hand if I want to make more power... thats why im considering my options

well right now I only have like half of that, just trying to see how much more I have to go. half thought about getting a bigger motor too though

just buy you a set of eagle h beams (500ish), some diamond ands rings (700ish), main, rod and cam bearing in clevite (280ish), polish the crank, balance (200ish) assemble and go.. you have more than enough cash to forge the motor you have now and still afford a nice set of patriot's or 5.3's.
then you'll have the platform with which you can spray **** tons of nitrous into and not worry about an oops.
this is the beauty of the small block chevy.

Check out texas speed to just give you an idea on cost, they sell assembled built engines for 5k and less. 347, 364, 370, 383, 402. You have some good options at that price range.

Check out also RMS in Texas the owner Josh works only on LS engines that is all one car at a time and is finishing up my ride and he does really good quality work. Josh was referred to me by Lloyd Elliot. Lloyd is one of the top head/cam guys around for LS1. Lloyd has this knack for turning what ever he touches into gold LOL.
