Default Oil for LS1.???

What is the best option for LS1?

1) Royal Purple 5 - 30 + Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer = (4 + 1)
2) Royal Purple 10 - 30 + Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer = (4 + 1)
3) Royal Purple 10 - 40 + Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer = (4 + 1)
4) 100% Royal Purple 5 - 30 = (5)
5) 100% Royal Purple 10 - 30 = (5)
6) 100% Royal Purple 10 - 40 = (5)

I used 100% royal purple 10w30 in my car and when I took the rotating assembly out (almost 100K) the bearings looked good. Didn't really notice a whole lot of difference after I switched to it over mobil though, except oil pressure drops faster in Royal purple the closer you get to 3K. When I had mobil would be a little over 40lbs. when it came to 3K with royal purple it would sit dead on 40lbs. Not a big difference just the only thing I noticed. I'll prolly go back to mobil when it comes time to switch to synthetic in my motor, just for cost and availability factor.

your best option is NO royal purple. Its an overpriced sub-par oil.

Go with a nice synthetic (Penzoil platium, Castrol, Valvoline, etc) in 10w30 or 5w30 and a good filter (no cheapies)

Its hilarious how much thought goes into which oil to use in a simple, basic engine like an LSx.

If you're going to use RP, leave the additives out. Start with 5w 30 and see how the pressure looks.

Lots here use Mobil 1

German Castrol is excellent - their 0w 30 is highly rated.

If you changed different brand oil filters I would say that made the difference in oil pressure. Ive noticed a difference psi in different filters...not much but a difference...

Check out bobistheoilguy.com site and forum if you really want to learn about what oil to use and whats good to look for etc.

I personally dont like lucas....sure it climbs the gears in the store but if you notice theres tons of mini air bubbles in the oil, wheres theres oil theres no oil....plus oil is made with ingredients so it doesnt need additional additives.

there was also a good write up on bobistheoilguy site where he made a gear case ran by an electric motor to simulate a rear end or chevy type oil pump and it Foamed like crazy with lucas in it, I looked for it on the site but I couldnt find it idk if he took it down or not.

I have had great results from Valvoline Synthetic 10w-30 with a NAPA Gold Filter.

Stay away from FRAM Filters they are JUNK !!

I highly doubt it is because you changed to GC. How many miles are on the 347?

Why not go with a GM oil Filter? I used RP 5-30, over priced no that I look at it. Just use some type of synthetic, like Valvoline.

Both the K&N and the Mobil 1 oil filters are the same with the exception of the welded on nut. They are both made by a company called Champ Laboratories. I always get the Mobil filters, I don't think the nut is worth the couple bucks.

I doubt this is your problem with the oil pressure but I personally would have ran conventional oil for the first 5k. Synthetic isn't meant for breaking in new engines.

To break in an engine use regular oil not synthetic. Use Valvoline, Halvoline, or similar 10 w 40 Petroleum Car Oil for at least 2 full days of hard racing or 1,500 miles of street riding / driving. After that use your favorite brand of oil. I would actually do my first oil change about 20 miles of running the engine. The immediate break in or 80% of it happens with in 20 miles the last 20% takes a little longer. People fight back and forth about new engines, well this is not a new engine it is a rebuilt and you have either modded the engine one way or another or added to it one way or another. While synthetic oils are great for new STOCK engines I have not taken any chances and done it this way and have had no issues. But again you'll do what you want and feel comfortable with. Now the oil pressure has to do a lot with the oil pump you are using and is it what you are using right for your application. You have to see what you have done to the engine have you gone with a ported oil pump, are you using a HV oil pump, or a HP oil pump or a combination. There is a lot that goes into choosing an oil pump for the build but if the guy that did the work didn't steer you in the right direction or if you did the work and you where too prideful to ask, you might be in some trouble sooner than you think.
