Difference between run of the mill 408 and an ultra high HP 408??
Hey guys,
I have read about a bunch of ultra high N/A horsepower (900 HP) 408's, 414's and 427's lately and was wondering what the main differences are between these and a run of the mill 408 that might make 500-550 HP?
The ultra high HP motors I am talking about are the ones that power the hugger SS of Sam's car, Joe Huneycutt's car, and their is one being discussed in the LS1 section on yellowbullet.
The obvious differences I can see are:
dry sump oiling
awesome set of heads
solid roller
awesome valvetrain-eg jesel
high compression-14:1
What else am I missing? Even with these differences I don't understand the 350-400 HP difference.
I would love to build an awesome 408, and would love to get 650 hp out of it but I also don't have $25,000 to spend.

Seriously,
241 heads vs TFS 225's
1 3/4 vs 1 7/8
ls1/6 intake vs ported fast 92 are just a few examples, there are many more.
Basically you need to buy all the optimum parts if you want to get an optimized build. Unfortunately optimum parts cost a bit more then the base parts.
Give Vengeance Racing a call they can put together a top notch ENGING Package that won't break the bank man.

The difference is the person who
A.. built the combo
B.. person who tuned it.
C.. suspension
Anyone can throw a bunch of money at an engine but its a properly thought out combination built by someone who really knows what they are doing that usually runs a little better.
IIRC HKE built at least one of those you mentioned I can set you up with a similar engine and it wont cost 25k
The 408 short block is $4475 and then it depends on your budget from there for the top end. TFS 235's arent that expensive really, and if your looking to make big power you are going to have to spend a little money. If you aren't in restricted class then going bigger than a 408 is better.
Whats your budget? We've got a 457 for $15,995 that should run mid to low 9's in a 3300 lb car. You've seen the little brother all over here (james day car IIRC?). It was a 445, and this is its big brother...LOL
