tool my dad made didnt work that much better than the hand crank crap from oriellys. HOWEVER, i found a guy i know about 30min away that had the crane tool and OMG cake work. Tomorrow is the day. coil packs, water pump, and radiator back in and it should come alive !!

Get yourself one of these and you will never have any problems changing valve springs..it is money well spent....I've been using one for the last four years.

mileage is irrelatvant if motor is maintained.
I took 2 years to decide which cam is right for me it's mild and the car is extremely fast and drivable.
trick is to match all the other parts to the duration of cam.
my suggestion is to meet in person LS1 folks and disscuss you're expectations
LS1 folks are usalley cool talk and go for rides some will even let you drive there cars.
BTW stock cams are a joke.
