My buddy's wife started his 02 B4C Camaro up to hear this this week.

sounds like rod knock to me...
not a lifter, wouldnt be moving so fast as the cam is spinning at half speed of the engine, the knocking is way to fast for that at idle.

Damn 02 Coil bracket, I'm gonna have to try and unbolt it from underneath. (@$*(%#*.

It's a former police car, out of duty for 12,000 miles.
It's looking like a stacked bearing. I live an hour away from the damn thing now, so I'm going back Sunday to pull the oil pan.
The motor locked up turning the crank without sparkplugs =/

Here's the filter:

Here's what came out of the filter (drained into coffee filter, not pulled out of cardboard:

Here's the cardboard, nothing in it at all:

So: here's what we got:
Nasty, NASTY tick, nearly on every RPM. Valvetrain is solid. Motor locked with spark plugs out and belts off, car in park. Will not turn EITHER direction.
Small bit of bearing material in the filter. Oil at 50-60PSI at idle.
