is there a way to prime the oil system on a ls1 while it is on the engine stand.

When I built my engine I cut the top off a QT oil and held it up into the pick up tube. Then took a wrench and spun the engine over as fast as I could and it did suck out all the oil from the qt bottle, did that with 2 qt's. Unpluged the coils for first start up and it build oil pressure in about 4-5 second.

I would just take off both covers and pour oil on the rockers in stuff. That's what I plan to do when before I start up my motor.

By unpluging the coils the engine can't fire but will spin with the starter. This will prime the engine with oil and you can watch the oil pressure gauge go up to 30-40 psi. This is also a good time to listen to the engine for any bad sounds. Once you get oil pressure plug the coil packs in and fire it up. You can also pull the fuel pump fuse to get the same result.

Wont the injectors still operate with the coil packs unplugged? My concern would be washing the cylinders down.

+1. if you're going to disconnect coils you really ought to pull the fuse for the fuel pump, also. if it's on a stand obviously you need not worry about either of those issues. give the pickup an oil source, find a way to crank it over, remove the plugs to make it easier..etc.

well i guess i could install the flexplate and starter to turn it over to build oil pressure.

The right way would be to use the port located behind the power steering pump. You have to get a fitting and run a quart or two through it at about 30psi.

If you pull BOTH fuel injector fuses the spark and fuel will be disabled, you can turn it over to your hearts delite.
