Default Cam neccessities....

I plan on putting a cam in my car, and it's got some miles, nothing rediculous, but it has some..... I already know that an oil pump and pushrods with new springs are a given, but since I have it all apart, should I worry about lifters? I know the bearings are still good, and I won't be revving it sky high either... Car is a 99 A4, cam will most likely be around the 224-228 range.

If it's over 100k I would get some LS7 lifters safe insurance. What do you consider sky high? What are the specs on your cam? I would change the timing chain to an ls2

If you are not hurting for money, yes. Replace the lifters with some LS7 lifters. I would get an adjustable timing set as well.

if your going to replace the lifters then you might as well at least have your heads ported since you have to pull them to replace the lifters anyway, and also do an underdrive pulley. just my .02 cents worth.

we did the work on this members car, and our rule of thumb is if ur doin a cam, do the oil pump, pushrods, timing chain, pickupseal, and springs, and lifters, but if your over 100 thousand miles, look in to getting a set of rockers as well. through all the cam and head swaps we have done, we have noticed that the higher mileage cars will have very, very work pushrod pockets on the rockers. and if u up the cam theres gonna be more travel as well, just wearing it further, hope trhis helps,

Very helpful actually, I'll add rockers to the list... the car has 117k on it. As far as cam specs, I'm leaning towards a TR224 with either a 112 or 114 lobe. I'm thinking around 6500 MAX revs.

I would do the lifters if you're swapping/porting heads, but if you're not doing that then I would wait (unless you don't plan on ever doing heads). Like others said, timing chain and oil pump are usually always a good idea especially on the older ls1s. Make sure you get the whole gasket setup that includes the valve cover gaskets, water pump gaskets, timing chain gasket, and crank seal.

a cam swap is usually a good chance to do maintinence on your motor. the higher the mileage, the more reason to spend that extra money to keep it running longer. pretty much everything everyone has said applies, timing chain, oil pump, lifters & rockers if you arent gonna do heads, etc. if it were me i might as well get a little port job if you dont wanna do a new set of heads

just wondering, does anyone know is scoggin dickey is still selling those 241s fully assembled for cheap anymore?
