Default Quench for a Stroker 403

I've got my shortblock together now and the pistons are .010" out of the hole. I'm looking for the best possible quench by getting the right head gasket thickness. Here are the specs on the motor:

4.005" bore
4.000" stroke
6.125" rods
1.110" comp height on pistons
9.225" deck height (Square decked the block)

-3cc pistons
66cc chamber TFS 235's

Here is what I come up with in my calculator for quench and compression with different gasket thicknesses:

.040" gasket = .030" quench and 11.98:1
.045" gasket = .035" quench and 11.83:1
.050" gasket = .040" quench and 11.69:1

My main question is a .030" quench too tight? I've heard from numerous places that .040" is ideal. I just want the most power I can get!!!

A tighter quench will not produce any noticeable increase in power. For street .040 is about perfect, With your pistons out by that much I would stick with that.

0.040 quench is where you want to be.

Another question... I plan on eventually spraying a 250-300 shot on this motor and from the looks of it a stock LS2 head gasket will get me right around .040-.042" quench. My question is will the stock GM MLS gaskets hold up vs an aftermarket gasket?

I asked this same question in the Nitrous section a while back and it turns out a lot of the nitrous guys spraying a big shot are running a stock 5 layer MLS gaskets and suggested it.

Wouldn't the tighter quench at 0.030" still give a little better resistance to detonation at his compression level?

Yes it does, It all depends on what P-Wall clearance you are running and before you choose head gaskets you need to measure how much your piston can rock side to side, ive measured .017 piston rock before and the quench would have been .023 with .040 gaskets and on N20 motors they are usually slightly looser P-W and that could spell disaster if you don't check these things out before slapping them together, thats why .040 is the safe number they figure no one will slam pistons into heads at that range but if your engine is Blueprinted and you aren't running Crazy RPM you can get away with less FWIW JMHO

Yeah I'd rather not push my luck with Piston-Head clearance. So I'm probably going to go with a stock LS2 head gasket on this setup because I don't see the gasket blowing with the right tune on the car!
