Default These heads fixable or should I pass?

A gentlemen has these set of heads forsale that are "slightly" damaged. He said they got knocked over. He stated that it would take 0.004-0.006" to clean them up. They guy wants $200. Casting#799.

IMO i think it might take more. I dont mind taking more off, but I dont want to mill off too much and worry about ptv clearance.

What do you guys think? worth it or no?

Thanks

doesn't look too bad from those pics, you should be able to get them cleaned pretty easy. All depends on what cam/lift you're running. If you're really worried about it, fly cut the pistons so you can do whatever the hell you want with the setup/cam ... lol

The only area I would worry about most is where the head gasket seals with the metal ring. I would polish out the rest or if its really minor, maybe a minor mill could fix it.

However, that does not mean the heads might not have cracked on the inside.

Honestly, i was more worried about the scratches by the coolant passages (pic 2). I think the where the metal ring on the HG sits would clean up, as they dont looks as deep.

Still think its decent deal, considering the machine work?

If you mill much more than .040" you are going to have issues with your intake fitting correctly. You will also need to get your intake machined properly. Milling much more than .020-.030" will really limit your camshaft selection.

LS6 heads seem to be selling for around $450 to $500, the 799's are maybe a little cheaper. How much does it cost you to mill heads by you? By me it would probably be $120 for the set. So you are only saving maybe $150. I worry about the one in the left picture around the cylinder. I think the coolant holes would seal ok. I second what the last poster said about how much the heads can be milled. If you take enough off that you have to take some off the intake side add another $80 to the costs. Also your cylinder compression will be getting increased in the process. Good luck with your decision.

A fall like that could have caused some real damage in there. You really never know, just go and look at them.

It cost me $50 to have a set of 243 heads milled .020" and that gave me 62cc combustion chambers. That yielded 11:1 compression ratio using gm mls gaskets which are .051" thick ($28 a pair). If the scratches are only .004-.006" deep than they hardly fell at all and you should have no issues!

.004-.006 would be fine but i'm assuming you havent actually gone to verify this yourself. if they are that shallow then it's a pretty good deal. if they are deeper you might look into having the surface welded up then a clean up pass

Yeah, they were actually on ebay. I decided to pass on them. By the time i got them with shipping and then machining, i'm not really getting a "good" deal.

Thanks for all the comments.

No Prob. I just came across the post and like said with the extra cost, a deal soon becomes a bust.
