Default Cylinder #1 problem

Cylinder #1 problem, ok im dumb founded on this. i did a compression check and it came out to 40 psi. the spark plug isnt oil soaked at all and the car doesnt miss at WOT or regular driving throttle. I have painted LT's and all are starting to burn the paint and flake except the #1 cylinder that is only showing minor fading and flaking. It also doesnt burn any oil or smoke. any ideas on this?

Nah its not a head gasket, the oil isnt milky and doesnt burn any coolant or over heat.my guess in taking rings out of the question is crank splash fouling out plug due to bad ring.that is my guess but im no expert so correct me if im wrong. id be ok if it was a valve, thats better than a ring in my book.

Do a leak down test and you will know.

Next thing on the list of hunting down the problem

Also when i did the LT install the exhuast port looked normal with no build up of gunk or oil.
I daily drive it and after 25-30 minutes of driving operating oil pressure at aboout 1,800 rpms is about 43 and idle about 38. on a cold start the pressure is about 50-51.

Could still be a head gasket... I saw that same thing happen when I was working on a blown foxbody, it had no compression on one of the cylinders, pulled the head expecting a trashed motor, it was just a head gasket. None of the usual indicators for a head gasket. It's worth a shot man.

I much rather pull the head than the motor, so if it is just a head gasket i would be content. pulling the head > dropping the motor.....again......

Thanks for all the input

Yeah, im hoping that its not anything to do with the piston. plus there are no signs of bad rings has good oil pressure, doesn't burn or consume oil or smoke, the exhaust port looks normal and the spark plug isnt oil soaked. then again i could just be in denial. so ill just pray and hope its just the headgasket.

Usually that type of symptom is top end not bottom end - like burnt or bent valve. When you say it doesn't miss at part or full throttle is that based on feel?

Like stated above, I would do a leak down test and see where it points you.

try putting the cylinder at tdc and hook the compression test tube to an air compressor as if you were changing the valve springs. See if you can hear the air leaking from anywhere. Compare it to the cylinder next to it

Do you have a misfire DTC at #1? Unlike Ford GMs misfire strategy is actually pretty useful. With compression that low you should be getting misfires on #1. Put a section of rubber hose over the dipstick tube and listen for air escaping during the leakdown.

Yeah, i feel nothing in foward movement of the car or in the shifter. i can floor it at 1,000 rpms in 3rd gear and have no problems.

One thing i forgot to mention is that it does have a slight miss at idle

Like i said above i would rather pull a head than the motor, dont have the resources i once had to do that again. therefore id be paying someone to do something that i can......

Thanks for all the advice given to those who posted.

If you have the knowledge and ability to do the job you can probably buy the tools you need to complete the job for less than what you will pay someone else to do it for you. Some tools can be rented for free and you can borrow others tools. Some you may have to buy out right.
