Default Budget LQ4 Cam

I'm building a iron 6.0L .030 over (4.030 Bore) and I'm looking for some input on what cam to use.

My goals are to break the mid 400WHP mark and hopefully approach the 500WHP mark in a 3,000lb mini truck with a manual trans. I'm shooting for aprox 11:1 compression, with foraged pistons, stock LS1 rods and 317 or 243 heads.

What cams should I be looking at?

My driveability goals may seem a little odd, I don't want a 1/4 mile monster, and I also don't need a daily driver. I'd like to spin the engine hard on open road courses.

Well it's mostly a hot rod for the streets? cruises, and power tours, but I'd like to to be fast as well. I didn't realize RPM was a taget to shoot for, but I'd like to keep some reliability as well. I don't see myself wanting to go past 7000RPM on a regular basis.

Oh and I'm going to be using the GMPP 4-barrel intake anf a 750cfm carb.

The GM cams are very good for what you want, low priced, easy on the springs and designed to run on GM springs.
cams as 02-04 ls6 cam, hot cam, asa cam.

You would be better of looking at L92/LS3 heads for the power levels you are seeking. 450>500rwhp will require to move some air and those heads can do it fairly easy at a good price.
Once you choose the heads, then you choose a cam.

I had completely forgotten about the L92 heads. Most likley I'll use a new pair of as cast L92's from GMPP

So lets say I use a 4.030 bore iron block W/ GM L92 heads, GM (LS3) 4bbl intake and inexpensive long tubes. what should I be looking for in a cam?

I just found an article from hot rod mag where they tested 5 cams on a stock LQ9 bottom end with the new LS3 heads, and even with what they consider to be a streetable cam they where in the 500-520HP range on the engine dyno with a carb. I think I'll basically copy their build and shoot for about 520 on the engine dyno.

here is the link to that article

We have fully assembled L92 heads for $500. We could also combine it with a LS3/l92 spec'd camshaft to complete the package for you!!

after reading that hotrod article I have changed my HP goals, 500+ crank HP seems like a very attainable goal and still save some street ability.
