Default Cam install on an A4 question

I'm going to be installing heads/cam package on my 2000 A4 WS6 and I was wondering what techniques people have used to lock the flywheel while removing the crank pulley. Anyone use the flywheel locking tool or some other method?

I used the tool, it works great but like all Kent Moore it costs 4 times what it should...

Well if you don't want to spend a butt load of money on a tool you only use once, do it the old-fashioned way: Take the spark-plug wires off or unplug the ignition coils. Next get out your heavy-duty breaker bar socket wrench with one-inch drive and put it on the bolt with the handle braced against the ground on the DRIVER side of the pulley. Then go tap the starter switch. The bolt is now loose!!! Serious, it works.

I had a freind hold the flywheel with two screwdrivers, while I broke the bolt free. It wasn't easy, but it worked.

I use a crow bar in the flywheel hole, (take off the starter), and have a friend turn the crank bolt out while I hold it, or vice versa. Works every time.

Wedged the end of a wrench in one of the three holes and then used a very big breaker bar. Wrench got stuck...but it came unstuck after torqueing it back the other way a little bit. Don't know about the starter idea....seems a little harsh on your starter, especially if you want it to last. Just my opinion though.

What about taking an air wrench capable of 250+ ftlbs and just putting it on the bolt and giving it one good shot? Would this work or would it be too harsh on the engine?

Haven you people heard of working smarter not harder. Get your impact gun, put it on reverse, squeeze the trigger, oh look the bolt just came off all the way. And take a look at that the motor is not hurt nor did it turn!!!!!

I used the Cal method (above) of removal with the starter & the Chad R method (above) to re-install.No special tools & no starter removal.FWIW my 250ft-lb impact didn't move that bolt.

Thanks for all the input. I'll just put my little bro under the car and let him hold the crow bar in there. I'm about 220lb and lift weights constantly so I don't think it'll be a problem getting the bolt out.

I think you meet the qualifications for that one!
