I'm finally getting my '98 back together. Its a cam only motor( and .025 cut heads) and i was thinking about just using a Melling stock replacement oil pump. Is there a need for a high volume pump on such a mild motor? I ask be cause I have heard about oiling isuses.
Thanks

as long as you have the non 97-2000 oil pump. those years the ls1 oil pump had some problems with the relieve valve. the melling stock pump should be fine. but you can get a lingenfelter high volume pump for $89 bucks from there website which is pretty darn cheap for a high volume pump

for instance my 99 pump just went out at 92k miles. the relieve valve starts to catch in the side sharp castings, and when it catches it can stay completely open and thats bypassing all the pressure. the 01 and 02 camaros got the same pump as the LS6 motors which is a more reliable design. i had zero oil pressure on a morning start and i immediately shut the motor down. so now i bought the lingenfelter oil pump and i ported it and i used a .100 of a shim on the stock pressure spring, so i get about 60 psi on idle and at WOT it goes to about 80psi but with the shimming it should be at 73psi relieve

I just repaired a 99 truck with 255,000 miles on it with a 5.3. Oil pressure just dropped and ticking started. I put a new stock pump in and timing chain and it runs prefect. I took the old pump apart and you can see the and feel the edges that clause the problem.

yea thats about the price i paid, its really a great deal, and the black o ring that comes with it seats in the snout really really snug so thats good too. you can also port the internals like how i did to mine, make sure to center the pump on the car before you bolt it up as in use the feeler guages at .002 on each end of the outer rotor
