Default LS1 oil pump

We need to replace the oil pump on my brothers LS1 and wanted to know if removing the oil pan would be necessary in order to do this? He's installing an MS4 cam and also has a new timing chain setup that he needs to install, so we have to get that oil pump out of there. Thanks in advance. Happy Thanksgiving.

Nope...oil pump mounts on the front. Pay close attention to the o ring. Make sure you don't pinch it while mounting the pump. If its pinched you will have pressure issues. For me....I disassembled the pump and mounted the body first, then assembled the pump on the engine. Very simple process.

No...you can get to the bolt without taking the pump apart. I only disassembled the pump because I wanted to ensure I did not pinch the o ring upon remounting it. I installed a TSP ported LS6 pump with my cam swap.

When I removed the pickup tube I made a small "wall" with some clean shop rags in the front of the oil pan. That way if the bolt fell it would not roll to the bottom of the pan. I also had a pen magnet handy while loosening the bolt to the pick up tube.

If you do use rags...make sure you dont forget to remove them.....

EDIT: Not questioning your mechanical abilities with the above rag comment. I have read on here that some have forgotten to remove them. Best of luck on the swap.

2 more question, do I just bolt on the oil pan with the original gasket, and with no RTV silicone?

You will not need to completely remove the pan to swap the pump. I ended up loosening my pan so that I could drop it about an inch or so to give me more room to work. I did not change the pan gasket and have not had any leaks after 2 cam swaps.

I did apply silicone to the front of the pan and and where the front cover meets the pan.

I would recommend changing the front timing cover gasket and the crank seal gasket.... and the water pump gaskets. You can get a cam swap gasket set from many of our sponsors. I got all my stuff from Texas Speed.

Got all of the required parts from Texas Speed, along with an MS4 cam, and new cylinder heads. We measured today(PTV Clearance) and everything seems alright. Unfortunately we have to wait for the pump, till Wednesday, but were taking everything apart just to come back and drop the pump back in.

Sounds nice. Best of luck on the swap. Once you guys have her buttoned up and tuned, come back and post numbers in the dyno section.

I am out to watch the second half of the Denver/Giants game.

Happy Thanksgiving.
