Default Worked 243's worth the $$$$????

I've got a set of 243's off an 04 Z06 that I am planning on throwing on my 98 SS. At this point I am considering having a competition 5 angle valve job done and hand blended to the chambers and ports. But for the $475 additional investment to do that which includes decking them for clean up purposes, I am wondering if the investment is really worth the gains. If I did, i'd have just over $900 into the the set not including springs- damn close to a set of full CNC PRC heads that would probably out flow these.

FYI I'm putting in a cam with the new heads, haven't spec'd one yet until I decide what to do with the head situation.

BTW, Flow numbers from someone that has done this to their stocker heads would be extremely helpful.

who's doing the work will have a great affect on the power they will make. if you have the CORRECT guy do a quality VJ blended and the bowls opened up you would have a nice budget head. a good VJ can be worth 20+hp alone

Wanna buy a nice set of 243's?? JK, i'm not going to purchase another set of heads. My initial intent was to do a budget build, I don't disagree that PRC makes a great head for the $, just more $ than I have to spend. I'd still be cheaper than PRC if I move forward with the VJ and blend.

But would still like to see some flow data and/or dyno data to back up typical gains by doing comp VJ and hand blended. Note: I say "typical" gains, since there will be variances in blending and slightly in VJ.

I guess i'm more on the fence about spending the cash for the blending than I am about the VJ. I will probably go for the 5 angle....

What's so special about some PRCs? I would pay twice what PRCs cost to have my heads worked on by someone that really knows, but I have total confidence in the guy that I would use. Do you?

What makes you think PRC doesn't know what their doing?? If you've got money to throw around, that's your choice (luxury), not everyone is in that situation though. I have not seen/heard any reason to prove that PRC products are not worth the money (little). So, if you've got some basis for your dislike of PRC, let's hear it.

Is that what I said? I didn't say they were bad. They're just a set of ported heads. I don't have money to throw around, but I would rather pay more for something I know is better. If you don't want to spend money get a new hobby.

That is my new signature on a local forum! It is the truth though.

Did I say you said they were bad? Nope. What I am saying though is I want the most "bang" for my buck, who wouldn't. Why spend more than you have to for the same result if possible, that's the point. So, back to the basic question that started this....Would the $475 be worth the gains??? Experience/proof of doing this would be essential-otherwise speculation.

Experience and proof would be nice but who's to say you'll get the same workmanship as someone else who had the same work. Why not ask the guy who is working on the heads what he thinks.

just out of curiousity who would you use? to the OP your question really depends on who your spending the $475 with. just because 2 different places say your getting a 5 angle VJ does not mean your getting the same results. a knowledgable head guy will tell you the difference between an ok VJ and a good VJ can be 25+hp. spend your money wisely

If your gonna spend the $$$, go with a reputable shop. I don't have figures or numbers to back anything on VJ's, but if this local guy is the **** and has a good rep, then go with your gut. But if you look at TEA or AFR, proven shops who know their stuff, then YES, the $$$ will be well spent on quality work.
I just installed some 243s that I left stock, and got some really good gains. I could only imagine if I had them worked over what the additional gains would be.

PRC doesnt do anything to the bowl area either. As for any valve job.-unless they can step in and say what they do. I wouldnt know.

Does anyone know the gain from switching just from 241's to 243's?

I have a friend who got a good deal on a set of 243s. He did some mild port work on them himself (he's no professional, but they "looked" good) and did just a head swap and went from 12.79@109 to 12.50@112 in slightly warmer weather. That was on a car with lid, ported TB, shorty headers, ORY, and an open Borla. So I would say that his home ported heads were easily worth 30+ rwhp on a bolt on car. Unported should gain around 20rwhp, or more on a cammed car.

Jon96CRZ, what heads did your friend have on his car before the 243's? I'm coming from stock 806 castings, should get quite a kick in the pants even without additional work I think.
