Default Cam help for Winter project... need help with PTV and suggestions

After going back to stock rockers I want to move up on the cam over the Winter. Here is what I have... hopefully someone has a similar build or knows what will work PTV:

-Patriot Stage 2's with 2.05 intake valves, 67cc chambers, Patriot Gold .650 dual springs
-.040 Cometic head gaskets(thin)

-Stock 02 short block

I contacted two vendors today Thunder and Texas Speed. I pretty much ruled out a MS4 as it won't work and I was told that. Here is the list of the ones I am looking at but if anyone has a stick that would work I am all ears:

-El Torro 230/230 612/598
-Torquer v.3 231/234 643/598
-MS3 237/242 603/609
-Tsunami 235/240 654/609
-Raptor 236/242 615/615

Interesting thing I heard from Thunder was the T-Rex is the cam for stock heads but if you change them the Raptor is the better grind to use. I thought that odd but the way he explained it I understood.

I would go with the Torquer v.3 231/234 643/598 and check the ptvc

with the thin gasket i don't think you could go much bigger. i had to fly cut for a 238/242 with afr 59cc heads and the .040. they are 59cc but the afrs at 59cc still have as much valve drop as a stock head unmilled.

I have ran the 232/234 xer cam on a 112lsa 110 icl and i loved it. great mid range and good upper rpm pull and ran very well with a 150 shot.

What did you get for valve drop? I think you would like to see .150" but I have read here many that put a MS4 only have .060" tops.

Any dyno numbers or track times with that cam?

I think with my heads and gaskets I am real close to 11:1 now.

Yeah, I dunno. I'd pick a cam that would work best for me, then find a gasket that will keep it all safely together. Seems backwords to hunt for a cam after a gasket. But of those listed I like the T v.3

I guess for me I am going to need low 230 duration and high lift as selections.

the valve drop is not ptvc it is how far the valve drops to a flat surface. like set the head on a table and from the seat till it hits the table is valve drop

afrs 59cc (mine others may vary slightly, mine are from LG)

intake .155
EX .190

I had cut the pistons to a bigger cam before i had ran this so i can not say what ptvc whould be

I never had it tuned but ibeat my buddie by 2 car lengths that had a dyno'd 620hp 502 (crank) crate moter in a 69 camaro spraying 125

lost a rod bearing due to low oil a month after and switched cams to a 238/242 after the new engine.

but the 232/234 had way more midrange i would explain it as explosive mid range while spraying

i also ran the .040 gasket with the 59's for 11.8 scr

You need to check your clearance because I bet you don't really have a whole lot as it is. Thinner head gaskets + 2.05 valves, you want atleast .080" intake / .100" exhaust clearance.

Remove a valve spring on the intake and exhaust side and replace them with a set of checker springs. Make sure you are sitting on the base circles of the cam and have your engine at TDC. Tighten your rockers finger tight with the pushrods in place and make sure you do not collapse the checker springs. Roll the motor over and find where you have the least amount of clearance (roughly 10 BTDC). Setup a dial indicator on your valve tip and zero it out, now press down until the valve makes contact with the piston and record the TIR (total indicator travel). If you dont have a degree wheel just rotate the engine and check for the least amount of clearance. Than measure it with the indicator. Make sure you are not collapsing the lifters, I don't think it will be a problem with light checker springs.

I'm running a ms3 in mine, still on stock heads though. I love it but you really have to rev the cam out, its shifting at 7k. Right now I'm only going through the traps at 6000-6200, it needs to be around 6800-7000rpm. It needs a gear bad.

What are you goals for this build? Don't start throwing out off the shelf cams before knowing and think we'll be able to pick the one for you...if your looking for something with street manners and to still make some decent power a Torquer v.2 would be right up your alley as well as a TR224....if your looking to make some serious power and not worry about street driving look into a polluter, Trex, or MS4.....

Well now I have a motor problem I am tracking down. If the top comes off I will notch the pistons and look to go bigger. My goals have been to go 10.99 NA all motor.

Sell the heads and get something better if you are taking them off.

Like what would be a big producer over these (worth the money)?

I was thinking more of having these massaged a little by hand by a local porter I have used before for < $500.

These had the flow numbers already pretty decent.

I think a set of ported 243 (LS6) heads with the stock valve size and 62cc chambers would allow you to run a bigger cam. I doubt it would even cost you a difference of $500. Your 67cc chambers and 2.05 valves are not helping you much at all. Look into a set from advanced induction or TEA as they seem to produce great results. Your heads would work better on a lower compression boost setup.
