OK, just looked it up in one of the ls1/ls6 books I have and it said the ls1 is about 107lbs and the iron block is 88 more lbs.

I don't see why the aluminum ls2 would be anything more lbs. then an ls1, still same structure with steel sleeves. And the later blocks post 99 i thhink had windage windows in the blocks, so maybe they are even lighter by a few ##'s?

Thank you Very Much, SilverZ28!

I have heard people tell me there was a 300lb difference, and nearly scared me out of considering an Iron block for my build, In which I am currently in the research process.

maybe is you were comparing the ls1 to and old 440 chrysler big block..LOL

some of the older lq9 or lq4's came with iron heads, whitch that would add another 50 on top of the 88, but thats still 138lbs. Most any motors now from gm all have aluminum heads, it must have been a budget thing in the earlier years.

This excerpt is from the "Anatomy of the GM LS1 V8" article:

"The block weighed just 48.85kg, some 48 per cent
lighter than an equivalent iron block"

I did the math:

Aluminum LS1 block: 107 pounds.
Iron equivalent: 207 pounds.

Similar ratio for 6.0l would apply.

That's assuming the casting is exactly the same, but I *thought* the aluminum blocks have a bit more material for strength.
