I didnt think you needed something like that just to hone the bores out using a hand drill and a ball hone?

I could be wrong though.

No, a friend of mine owns Engines Ulimited here in town. Full machine shop with in house dyno. He doesnt have a deck plate for a LS1, so he was wanting to know how nessesary deck plates would be for cleaning up the bores.

Would a deck plate from a Ford work? IIRC, someone here last year found out you could bolt up a 351C head to an LS block...

A deck plate is not necessary for honing. I do hone my blocks on a sunnen machine. Most mechanics dont know how to hone a block correctly. Sometimes its better not to hone if its done WRONG. I am not beating up on anyone or saying people dont know how to do it. But in 47 years i have seen more than i would like of a messed up hone job. Tom

if you are looking for the most power and least oil consumption-deck plates are a must-but then again if the bores are being honed correctly-it doesn't matter.I have had a couple new engines in here with oil consumption issues, the machine shops had honed the bores and they were .003 out of round and tapered. Most production machine shop use too much pressure and are in a big hurry when honing cylinders. We have picked up as much as 50hp from a poorly honed cylinder.

I've seen Ford plates used when a shop didn't have the money or hone enough LS1s to buy one.
