Just put down 378 whp with a hotcam and 146,000 miles in a 98
Done at hpp racing in Lewisville TX this Monday. Car has mods in sig, an aluminum flywheel with ls7 clutch, hotcam, ls6 springs, and hardened pushrods. Still has stock 98 heads, rod bolts, and 342 gears. 378 whp and 370 torque na, pulling 2 degrees on the top end for the nitirous. With a 100 dry shot put down 475 whp and 510 torque. Blew threw the clutch on the first run but it held on the second. I'm amazed by the numbers, was not expecting a gain of 38 hp to the wheels. The guy tuning the car said it had more power in it, but he wasn't going to add anymore timing because the car has 146,000 miles, the stock timing chain and stock oil pump.
Anyway, very pleased with a $100 hotcam, $100 pushrods, and $60 springs, just thought I would pass on the good news. EDIT: car made 341 whp and 353 torque before the cam swap and before the flywheel, just want yall to know all the facts
Oh and I couldn't find the spring removal tool so I made one, it took about 3 hours and a lot of grinding, but worked very well.

Stock injectors, racetronix fuel pump, no hot wire kit
Heres the specs, very little lift:
GMPP Hot Cam
218/227 int/exh @ 0.05" duration
0.525" / 0.525" int/exh lift
112 LSA

Not sure what brand dyno it is, I know its an inertia dyno.
The timing chain looked fine and I've never had an issue with my oil pump. When a buddy changed his to a ported pump, he actually lost pressure, mine has stayed the around 40-50 psi since the day I bought the car. If it does go out, I'll fix it then. And I'm used to driving the superbee where my eyes are glued to the gauges, so I'm usually watching.

Pertaining to the timing chain....Its classified in my mind as so important that if you remove it before its time to replace, let's say the second half of its lifespan, then replace it. Doesnt matter how it looks, its a cover your *** kind of deal. For $100 I would replace 50-75k+ lifters as well, if the heads had to come off. When I drop my trans I always install a new front pump seal. I guess Im overly cautious

I appreciate the input, and sounds like its good insurance to do the chain, my mistake. I've just never heard of a chain breaking, just stretching. I'm sure you guys are right, but lets hope for my motors sake my stock one can hang on for a while, or at least until I get greedy and want more cam.

Just an FYI, on this subject it really has nothing to do with what Koolaid you're drinking or "opinions". It's a proven/common fact that chains break in these cars with more power, especially worn chains. I've rebuilt several motors for guys who thought they didn't need to spend the extra time and $50 to replace a chain. Instead they spent about a week without their car and a few thousand dollars.

If you search, it comes up with only 13 threads out of all the history of this site, and if you read between the lines, I would bet you that most of their cam installs were not checked for PTV clearance, probably over rev'd and the chain took the blame.
I put my first cam in @ over 120,000 miles (left stock chain in) I pulled the motor after 170,000 with at least 70 bottles of spray put through it. The 5.3 still ran great, held great oil pressure, and didn't use a drop of oil between services. Sold the motor to a buddy and it's still running strong in his truck, and rags the **** out of it..
