Get a magnet! I did the same thing i could actually see the bolt laying in the front of the pan though. Dont think it will actually go to the bottom of the pan because of baffle in pan. Heres mine.

When you go back tie some fishing line or a wire around it (not tight because you want to be able to remove it after you get the bolt started).

Saved my *** a couple of times.

Good advice here. It's relatively difficult to get that bolt started again, so the wire is cheap insurance.

Get some kind of magnet and get the bolt out. Use a ratchet wrench to reinstall. It will hold the bolt and you don't have to pull the wrench off to get more throw on the bolt.

Mine slid all the way down and I was able to get it with a pen magnet. Stuff a towel in there if you get it out so if you drop it again it wont fall all the way to the pan.

Is it possible to get the bolt out of the bottom of the pan with a magnet? Can it come out of the drain plug or is it too big?

When you get it out of the pan, make sure you tie a wire or something around it to make it easier and keep it in place. I used a metal coat hanger that I wrapped around the bolt and got it in there very quickly.

i had this same dilemma, i have no idea how we ever got it back in. i used dental floss to keep my bolt from falling, after the second magnet fish i decided we should try something different. it has to be thin like floss, thread, or fishing line, that way its not a hassle to work around and its easy to remove once you get the bolt started. it will take a good deal of cussing, and you might need to throw something. but hold your mouth just right and it will go in.

I have been trying with a magnet but have had no success. Any other ideas or do I need to pull the pan?

When I dropped the bolt in my car it fell all the way down to the lower part of the pan. What i did was got a strong magnet and worked it over the passenger side of the motor and then used a flex magnet and stuck it through the oil sensor??? i think thats what it was. This took me about a half hour.

How did you know it fell in the bottom? I am able to shake the pan but I can not hear it.
