Default Engine problem

I was on my way home tonight just cruising along the highway at about 70mph. I come up to my exit and let off the gas to coast down the offramp and hear a pop noise and the car turns off. I coast it to a parking lot and tried cranking over..It just cranks with an occasional pop noise out of the exhaust. I checked all fuses and they are all good. I checked the spark and I have that also..Fuel pressure is good. It just cranks and cranks..Anyone have any ideas on what this may be? Everything sounds normal. The only thing I can think of is maybe the timing chain broke, but I dunno.Any input would be greatly appriciated

Thanks

if you broke the timing chain i'd think you'd know it as the pistons hitting the vavles has to got make some kind of noise. list your mods as well?

99 SS A4
5.3 AS heads
595/595 230/230 110lsa cam
ported TB
hooker full lengths
comp timing set
LS6 intake
PT4200
built 4L60
3.73s
some suspension work

I hear no odd noises whatsoever except for the occasional popping noise when cranking it over. sounds kinda like a backfire but not as loud.

Umm.. ok some theories... maybe cam or crank sensor died and it now fires 180 degrees off... In this case you should smell gas in the exhaust. If gas is not smelling check injector wiring harness connectors. If it's neither then maybe computer died or somewhere there is a short circuit preventing things from operating.

Possibly.. but that's quick to check and you can't fail in diagnosing it. Damian, is it because of that particular timing set you're willing to bet ?

It was a broken timing chain. Nothing snapped, just stretched into pieces..Does anyone know if Thunder is open tomorrow?

easy to install, might as well get a new oil pump while your at it. i bought mine from TSP for 75 bucks. SDPC as sells them for like 80 bucks as well. lining up the timing marks took a bit. getting the oil pump on cranksnout is a bitch.

I heard no noises when my LT1 timing gear broke. It just cranked and cranked and cranked after it flat died on me.

And bent 10 valves. And put junk through the motor.
