If you've had a Comp Cams 216/220 come inside
I'm looking for a nice mild camshaft that will put my 1999 SS Convertible, M6 in the low 12s with bolt-on and stock cylinder heads. RWHP in the 370-380 range. This would be a sinch except for I want a stock idle, stock like drivability and stock durability (for the valvetrain).
I'm really interesting in the Comp 216/220 grind with LS6 valve springs and hardened pushrods, stock retainers. This seems like a great cam for my application.
If you have used this cam or have a buddy with one please give me your impression of the cam.
Thanks
p.s. I've done alot of searches and there's not much info on this cam from users.

I have a somewhat similar cam and I really lke the results. My friend will be installing the 216/220 cam in his truck in about a month and should not be any different than mine.

Search for Addullah in 1/4 mile sections. He had great results with an even smaller comp cams (212-214). Ran like 11.60's in the quarter mile if I remember correctly. This was with the older ls1 intake, not the 2001 intake.

I've been running the 216/220 for about two years. You really need to use 915 or 918 springs instead of LS6 springs. I have a slight amount of float with the 915's at 6,000+. With stock heads and shorties I was running 360RWHP. I just put on Jet Hots but haven't dynoed yet. My dyno guy claims that 400RWHP is doable with heads and the 216/220 cam.

I know a guy who is putting down 377rwhp and 400rwtq with a 212/218 .558/.563 115LSA cam with Stage 1 heads in a 2000 Z28 with stock intake and exhaust manifolds. Only other mods are a lid and SLP loudmouth exhaust. Car is a M6.

I have a bud who has this cam, and it sounds very close to stock, although volume is up there. If you have an ear though, you can hear the rumble. Suppose to give more tq than hp, and is underrated IMO for it's small level compared to other ls1 choices. Good tq across the board.

I have used the 216/220 cam in a couple cars, makes good power and has some lope to it. Its still a decent all around cam. Here is my car a while back with the 216/220 cam, ASP pulley, MAC headers w/cats, LS6 intake, TSP lid and a 12 bolt with 3.90 gears and then adding nothing but TEA stage 1.5 heads.
No need for hardened pushrods but I would use 915 springs or something similar..

The LPE GT2-3 might be worth thinking about too...it might need springs more often than the 216/220 but otherwise will do the stock driveability, idle as good as stock from what I've read.

Good luck with cam selection.

I have a tr224 in my 01 vert. I ran the 1/4 in 12.99 @ 112mph. Other mods in sig. I have not tuched the computer yet and ran with stock + weight and averaged 2.2 60's. You may not want to go smaller than me if you are looking for low 12's.
And I can somewhat drive an mn6.

This is good, keep the posts coming. I've read in several posts that the TR224 can sound like stock with tuning. I've read other posts where guys report moderate lope, It looks like the same cam can lope more depending on mods you have.
Most guys seem think the Comp 216/220 is Ok, and one post said there's much better cams for what I'm looking for, but so far I can't find a better alternative that makes the same or more power but while retaining stealth and valvetrain durability. The Lunati/ MTI B1 221/221 does look like a possibility.
What would I need to do to make a TR220 or TR224s valvetrain sound like stock? Or is that impossible do to the extreme ramp rates of these cams (TR220 & TR224)?

I ran a TR220 on stock heads with comp 918's for a while.. I loved that setup. Made 380rwhp on a stock tune too with just headers, lid, and catback.. no pulley or TB. Alot of the valvetrain noise is due to dual springs, the single springs like the 918's are quieter.

The 216/220s are fairly loud when used with 918s, I have used them in a few different cars and they are no quieter then the XE cams as far as valvetrain noise.
Valvetrain noise is just part of the deal, funny thing is the last couple XER cams I installed were fairly quiet..

Good cam,I have it in my 99 T/A. With Lt's, Fipk, Ported MAF ends, Ported TB. 368rwhp/376tq. After I installed a set of SLP 1.85 + a Tune, I got 382rwhp/394tq. The rockers are good for an extra 10% lift. Very good cam for medium shots of N2O.
What I used to like about it was the broad torque curve, this has changed a little with the higher lift but now it responds better to my dry shot.
