Ya, I'm using Mobil 1 5w-30 synthetic. I might be switching to Royal Purple next oil change. And trust me, I'm not going to let my oil get low, that's how the engine blew out of my Firebird. The person who owned it before didn't take very good care of the engine and took it to some cheap oil changing place. Then after that a Hummer backed up over my front end. Good thing for insurance money and two summer jobs to pay for a Z28!

I wouldnt use the royal purple, its got alot more additives in it and on some cars will clog the screen on the oil pump pick up tube. Id continue using the mobil 1 or switch to like amsoil.

I converted to the LS6 valley cover and PCV system 5 years ago ... the car now has 202,000 + miles on it and it uses about 3/4 of a quart every 5,000 miles which is the oil change inverval...its had mobil one in it for its whole life...it sees the red line every day..and it is still going strong ..

To the poster that runs his engine a quart low ... LS series engines have a windage tray that keeps the oil away from the rotating assembly ... so that there is no need to run the engine a quart low....if you do it means your brain is running at least a quart low...

a trick i used to to on my SBF is use 1 quart less oil which causes less oil slowing the crank shaft which gave some seat of pants hp.

and over filiing your engine will also cause lots of air bubbles from the crank shaft whipping it
The more oil an engine can PROPERLY hold, the better. We're not talking about over-filling the crankcase, we're talking about using a longer filter that allows the extra capacity of 6 qts vs 5 1/2.

Go ahead and run your engine lower on oil in an attempt to gain a few ponies. I'll keep mine full and alive

The longer oil filter only adds about 2 of ounces more oil and it does hang lower than the oil pan...I would rather run with 2 ounces less oil rather than risk knocking the oil filter off of the car....2 ounces of oil doesn't mean squat in extending the life of your engine...but if you knock off the filter running down the interstate on one of those semi retreads that litter the road way see how long your engine will live..nuff said.

The longer filter does not hang down that much lower at all. The chances of something hitting it and coming off are slim and none. I have always run a longer filter with no problems.

So your saying you've personally measured the capacity difference between filters? And you've also had one installed on your car and it hung very low?

First off you are mis-understanding my reply to Q8-Tech. More oil capacity IS better than less, but not once did I say that the longer filter and running the 6 qts over the 5 1/2 was going to extend the life of your engine. My point was there is no harm in extra oil if your means of getting there isn't by overfilling.

I can tell you this much. With the filter I use, K&N HP2006, the car holds a FULL 6 qts of oil, and the dipstick reads perfectly on full, not a little under, not a little over. The filter does not hang down in harms way. There is SO much more **** under the car that is lower than this filter.

So now we have a rich guy AND a know it all? With an attitude like that, don't expect much respect.

Pretty much sums it up.^^^

I just got back from a 85 mile roadtrip, and a member in this thread can back that up.

Engine hasnt been opened up until I painted the valvecovers. No oil use. Stock everything internally. He speaks the truth.

Exactly
you dont have to be rich to rebuild a SBF
thats why i run what factory recomends on my LS and i test any dumb idea on my SBF and it has yet to on fail me. also i dont come in here demanding or seeking respect every one has an opinion weather its dumb or not its an opinion, take it or leave it. i never forced you to run less oil in your engine
