Question about changing oil.
My dad changed his oil in his truck the other day and put on a bigger oil filter than stock. He read on some forums that he could do that. He always says the more oil you can put in a car, the better. So my question is can I put a bigger oil filter on my LS1 Camaro and if so what size? Also, is it normal for a v8 to burn some oil and how much?
I put a higher capacity oil filter (longer) on my LS1 once, but it stuck down more (lower than the oil pan) and I was afraid it might get whacked by road debris, so I went back to the standard filter. The extra 1/4 quart is probably not much of a difference.
The LS engines tend to use a little oil, especially if you have a few miles on them.

Ok, thanks for the info guys! So it is normal for it to burn oil? I have really low milage though. I'll try what you guys recommend. Also, about how much should it burn? I think I'm burning anywhere from a half a quart to 2 quarts between oil changes. I don't drive it hard either.

Why would you put a filter that hangs below the oil pan? or anything else to hang down in a car like ours? Mine burnd and leaked 5w30 synthetc. GMMP very smart, they design this car for PAN, WINDAGE TRAY, [lower], OIL PICK UP TUBE, and PUMP placement. Change one, change allllll Wanarace918ht

I didn't think about the oil filter hanging lower. I'm not going to put a bigger one on since it does. I was just worried about it burning oil, that's not normal for other cars. I just wanted to make sure there was nothing wrong with it.
That's not a bad thing
OP My 5.3 burns about a qt. every 3k. It has 197k on it now and has been this way the last 6 years no change. It is a piston slap motor. My non PS 5.7 used NONE when I bought it but now uses 1/2 to 1 qt every 3k depending how I drive. It started as soon as H/C went on so I am sure it is pcv related. Your ok just keep an eye on it and don't run it low...

Alright glad to know it's normal for it to burn oil. I used to have a 97' v6 Firebird with engine problems that was burning about 3 qts of oil between oil changes and it made me worry. Thanks for the help!

H/C burned about 1 quart the first 568 miles. Pcv Issue...Blew a rod at 569 miles
DONT LET IT GET LOW!!! Go with Oil filters that were made for the car. You could put a longer one and hit it in a road bump and rip the oil filter into two and you wont even know it. BYE BYE MOTOR!!
more oil in an engine is never better.
a trick i used to to on my SBF is use 1 quart less oil which causes less oil slowing the crank shaft which gave some seat of pants hp.
and over filiing your engine will also cause lots of air bubbles from the crank shaft whipping it
