Default Help deciding between lm7/lq4 for 240sx

Well with my tax return coming in the next couple weeks it's time to get serious about getting my 240sx running. I have already got all the swap parts ready to go now I just need to pull the plug on the motor/tranny.

My budget is about $3500 +/- $200

I will put away $1500 for the t56.
$300 - GTO oil pan
As for a cam, I was looking at 228r - $450 (cam, pushrods, springs)
I already have a FAST 78mm intake manifold also.
I also have some 241 heads I could toss on but I don't think they would give an improvement. Would probably get the stock 5.3's ported or something later on.

Everything else is up in the air. What i want from this car is a fun, fast, car that can keep up with vette's and other v8's on the street and track. I'm looking for mid to low 11's in the quarter mile NA and 10's on spray (100 or 150). I figure 400WHP NA should put me in that area. The car will be running a 3.90 rear end.

One more question is the front accessories, I have the ability to make brackets and whatnot but will I need to buy the F-body setup? I will be running PS but no AC.

I am not too worried about the extra weight of the iron block over the aluminum of the ls1 because this car has no interior and should still be under 28--lbs full weight.

I would like to go with the larger cube lq4 but the very cheap cost and availability of the lm7 is very appealing.

So what setup would place me at my goal? Any tips or insight?

Thank you.

I'd do the LQ4. That'll get you the power plus more for your goals. You can usually find the long blocks for around 1000-1200 used.

Maybe it's just around me but it seems almost impossible to find a lq4 around here (bay area). Any other opinions?

Sweet project, if you could pull it off with that budget its even better.

I miss my old 90 240sx even though it was slow as a snail.

That's cause you have a bunch of tree hugging hippies all around you that drive Prius, and gay *** Insights.

Check a nationwide junkyard site. You might have to ship, or if you don't mind, take a trip, but they're out there. Just gotta look and be patient.

I've been really considering a lm7 lately. I can get a complete one for around $600, throw my FAST manifold on there and a 228r cam, pushrods, valve springs. Do you guys think this is enough to put out around 380-400whp?

I actually just came across a 98' ls1 with a rod knock for $400. I figure I can tear that down, do bearings, rings, and gaskets. Then along with the cam and FAST manifold It should put me right at 400.

What do you think? any insight?

I think you should get the LS1 w/ the rod knock and rebuild it. Have you asked this question at the Sylvia forums ?

opps, reread your last post. a '98 block ? not as good

Yes it is a complete 98'. So could get it, rebuild it, throw some katech rod bolts and be done with the bottom end. I just would rather not mess with the 98 heads. I could throw some 243's on there but then I wouldn't have any money for the cam swap. So if i went with the 98 motor it would either be a cam swap or a head swap and the one that I didnt pick would come later on.
