Default How bad is this?

Exactly how much damage can occur from missing the 3-4 shift on a run, and accidentally putting the car in to 2nd gear?

I did it on one run -- immediately put the clutch back in -- but nonetheless, the tach did read near 7000 momentarily...

The car seems to drive fine still, and I have raced it since then. I trapped at 109 bone stock... after some modifications, I am trapping at 105. I think I have the problem's rememdy figured out to just be a simple dyno tuning... but I just want to know if something could have happened when I missed that shift.

Then again, had I screwed something up in there, wouldn't it cause more trouble than just 4 mph less in trap speed?

could have bent some pushrods, also indicative of your lower mph. Just pull the valve
covers off and check them.

Would that likely throw a trouble code and trigger an SES light?

No trouble codes, though...

How difficult is it to pull the valve covers off? Need to be done by a pro?

not hard at all. All your doing is taking the coils off, taking the valve covers off, taking the rockers off, and pulling the pushrods out to take a look at em.

OK... so if I don't have an SES light, might I still have bent rods?

yes. It should only take you about an hour or two to check the pushrods. check out
ls1howto.com and look under the cam swap instructions, it will show you how to remove
the valve covers and pushrods. Very easy.

Yikes, Jay....

Ya know....... when I was there for DreamCruise.....

Durring the week after the cruise, I was hitting Gratiot (lots of action). On that Friday, we were leaving Gratiot at about 1:00am, I did a rather hot turn around at the light just before you'd get on 696 to go west .... a few bikes were at the light waiting (on Gratiot) and then followed me down on to 696.

They wanted to run .. was all deserted ... well... you know....

So we start to go, I run it up to red line in 3rd and go to shift to 4th ,,,, and get 2nd.... WTF ?!?!?!?! Oh... woops .. er crap .. errr.. oh oh.....

Well, it seemed to run fine so we did it again..... up to about 130mph... they weren't losing me. I said that's enough and we all slowed back to about 60.

About a 1/2 mile up we have blues on our butts. I'm sure we were making a LOT of noise down there in the trench.... I'm in the right lane and a bike is in each other lane. The cop (State boy in a Suburban) is in the middle lane, behind one of the bikes. I say.. I'm not stopping unless he specifically tells me to. Ends up he pulls over the bikes and lets me go !!!! Whew!!!

Well, anyway... since then, I can't break into the 12s but I can get my MPH up to 108 or so, but typically 106 with about 13.3, which is what I did stock, before the "incident".

I'd do a compression test but it's such a pain in the rump on the passenger side. That's the only way to know if you tapped a valve on a piston.

If you bent a pushrod slightly, you could tell by pulling the valve covers and pulling the push rods.

Let me know what you find when you do.

Default Urgency?

OK, so if a bent rod is the problem... or if I damaged the pistons or valves, exactly how urgent is it that I get this fixed right away?

I am pretty strapped for cash, unfortunately... I had enough for a dyno tune saved up, but that's it... can this problem wait while I save up to fix it, or does it need immediate attention?

I don't think you damaged the pistons or valves due to the fact that you are still driving
the car with no ses codes or major problems. I have a set of used pushrods left over from my cam swap that I could sell you if you are interested $50.

Jay,

You can wait on fixing it ... as long as the car is driving "fine". Assuming that there is a problem.

However, I wouldn't do the dyno tune until you've checked it out.

Been there, done that. Unfortunatly, it was on a power shift.

I bent 2 valves.

I've seen the aftermath of this go from zero damage to 8 bent intake valves and a trashed piston.... (the other 7 were eyebrow'ed real bad)

The most common is bent pushrods, and depending on chance, a bent valve or two.

I was just in Holland, MI over the weekend, drove by Denooyer Chevy on I31 a bunch of times.

If the motor is not idling funny, or ticking, then probably it's not messed up.

But you might have some bent pushrods.

If you ever decide to make the valvetrain safer, install LS6 valvesprings and you can take the motor up to 6400 withough floating the valves.

Holland is a fantastically boring town... for a college kid anyways... hehehe. It has alot of small town "charm" and a gorgeous beach during the summer, but I definitely miss the hustle and bustle of the big metro area where I grew up - Detroit.

Thanks for all the help guys, I appreciate all the advice and will consider all the input

Calvin or Hope?

If you decide to inspect the pushrods buy a used set from someone who built their motor so you have new ones to put in. It's not hard but you need a torque wrench to retorque the rockers.
