Default Oil galley barbell question weird??

got a question fellas, the oil galley barbell in the rear of the block,, I bought a new one from GM, I noticed that the new one looks a little different than the original I removed, It is the exact same length, but the area with the o-ring is wider, and the Oring is a little further forward. IS this normal,,, Here is the other question,, My service manual says that the barbell is supposed to sit recessed in the galley .031-.055 The new one sticks out a little, I believe it will clear, dont think the cover will be affected, It looks like the gasket does not touch the barbell, I was worried about it sticking out so I put the original one back in to double check and guess what,, It sticks out also the same amount. What gives, Is the service manual incorrect or what? Block is a 98 LS1 5.7

I have photos of the barbells if that helps. I can post them up when I get home if needed.. Surely someone knows whats up.

All the plugs I've dealt with have stuck out a hair. I'm running a newer plug in mine and it was a little different from the old one just as you said. I say you are good to go.

GM changed the position of the o-ring on the newer bar bells, and probably used the new improved design to supersede the old one for replacement purposes.

This guy is correct. GM redesign the barbell I think on 99 and up. as for reusing it you can but it is not recommended since they are fairly cheap.

Thanks fellas, and As listed its like a 6 dollar part, that can destroy a 6 thousand dollar engine (dont tell my wife) , not worth the risk.

Hi guys, my barbell doesn't stick out much. It's just sitiing there almost flush with the block. How can I extract it?

I've got my new one ready to go in.

You can re use it. It will not effect it to stick out a little more or less and does not matter if you use the updated in the older block. To remove it you can either remove the 5/8" freeze plug from the front of the block and run something like a threadall or similar through the block to push it out, or take 2 screwdrivers and work it out from side to side. Either will work but the screwdrivers will ruin the one in the motor(makes no difference if you are replacing it any ways).

You can put a 90 degree pick from the common kits (mine is Matco) in from the threaded plug hole and push the old plug out. You can use the newer plugs in any engine, but you should not use the old plugs in a newer engine.

You certainly can reuse the barbell but I would suggest putting a new o-ring on there and make sure it's the same size and thickness o-ring . A little off topic but real close ,,,,,,the rear cover oil galley cross-over can be made larger which from what I understand helps with the long post start up lack of oil to the passenger bank valve train issue .
